Nothing Lyrics

If only the rules were built upon philosophy that I embraced
I'd hug your neck and kiss your face
But it's very obvious that your ideals are not for me
You'll tell me what to do
But you will see that I do as I please

Because I want to do it my way
And I want to fly
I want to do it my way
Because I want to fly

The problem with rules is they alienate the criminals
When who's to say if what they did was wrong that day
If you'd open your mind up
You'd see that there is nothing that's always wrong
No matter what you say
It's just not true that there's only one way

Because I want to do it my way
Because I want to fly
I want to do it my way
And I want to fly

I hope we have ourselves an understanding
I hope we have ourselves an understanding
I hope we have ourselves an understanding

This song is a definate tongue in cheek sarcastic poem showing the problems with post-modern thinking. After reading interviews with Dave I can tell that these lyrics don't mesh with his real beliefs. Once again, the great storyteller creates a character. I think this song is written to God. Think about it in those terms.

i think this song is a realistic message to an evil ex girlfriend. at least, i could read this to mine. lol. reminds me of when you have someone who's constantlly telling you everything you do is wrong, no matter how hard you try to do right, and they never forgive you for the mistakes you've made.

It might also be a conversation with a christian trying to tell him what he must do. Or with his parents maybe, since he was raised in a christian family. It might also be a person trying to free himself from the ideas he's learned in his youth, because he seems frustrated.

hey guys, he's talking to God in this song. not an ex or simply a christian.

I really disagree with haydogsup. Dave has mentioned how much he loathes Christian rockers for trying to be so in-your-face about faith and the like. I have trouble believing this song is about God. It almost seems a bit like he's prophessing his empirical philosophy on ethics.

As much as I love Pedro the Lion and Bazan, I think this song is rather naive. You could say that right and wrong are all about frame of reference, but to say that nothing is always wrong is to ignore that there is such thing as right and wrong. Sometimes Bazan reminds me of a section of my life when I was very confused, except he never left. Very angsty, and yet always arguing that all he wants is to be himself. In some ways I agree with this song, but knowing that Bazan claims to be a God follower (christian or not) this ignores a lot of what we are blatantly told via the Bible.

Then again, he could be opposed to the Bible too. In which case I'm not sure how he became accidentally associated with Christianity at all. But that's cool too.

This is the first song of the concept album Whole. It cannot be seen as just one song, but a sixth of a song. The album is the story of a man who is struggling, specifically with drugs. This is the intro to that character and his ideas... Eventually in the album he finds something different, finds a "whole fixing man" and ends the album with a "hymn." It's the story of a man finding religion.
