Dread and the Fugitive Mind Lyrics
Let me introduce myself
I ’m a social disease
I ’ve come for your wealth
And leave you on your knees
No time for feeling sorry
I got here on my own
I won ’t ask for mercy
I choose to walk alone
What ’s yours is mine and what ’s mine is mine too
If you shake my hand better count your fingers
What if I do get caught?
What if there is no judgement?
If I ’m right I lose nothing
If you ’re right I lose it all
I ought to get caught
Because I ’m doing something wicked
I ’m guilty haunted by my fears
And the only consequences
Are dread and the fugitive mind
You built walls to protect you
So no one will infect you
Pursued by those out there
That vanish in thin air
Come a long way to find
What you really left behind
You don ’t know when the end is
But it ’s coming fast
I ’m a social disease
I ’ve come for your wealth
And leave you on your knees
No time for feeling sorry
I got here on my own
I won ’t ask for mercy
I choose to walk alone
If you shake my hand better count your fingers
What if there is no judgement?
If I ’m right I lose nothing
If you ’re right I lose it all
Because I ’m doing something wicked
I ’m guilty haunted by my fears
And the only consequences
Are dread and the fugitive mind
So no one will infect you
Pursued by those out there
That vanish in thin air
Come a long way to find
What you really left behind
You don ’t know when the end is
But it ’s coming fast

I think this is being taken a bit too deep. Sort of like Metallica's "Of Wolf And Man" isn't about alcoholism or drug abuse;its just about a werewolf. This song, to me, is outlining what a thief or what a criminal feels in their mind. It outlines their thought processes.
"What if I do get caught? What if there is no judgement? If I ’m right I lose nothing If you ’re right I lose it all"
That part of the song is just the way it looks. If the criminal is deemed to be the correct person in a court of law, they don't lose anything, but if they're prosecuted and say, sent to jail, they lose everything.
i saw religion in this really.
"Let me introduce myself I ’m a social disease I ’ve come for your wealth And leave you on your knees" christianity. a social disease, (im sorry if i offend anyone btw. this is just what i found in the song) the church only wants your money, and leaves you on your knees.
"What ’s yours is mine and what ’s mine is mine too If you shake my hand better count your fingers " basically the same as above.
"What if I do get caught? What if there is no judgement? If I ’m right I lose nothing If you ’re right I lose it all " what if there is no heaven or hell means he can get away with his sins no problem. if hes right, he loses nothing, no hell. if religion is right, hes fucked and burning in hell.
"I ’m guilty haunted by my fears And the only consequences Are dread and the fugitive mind " sinners are guilty haunted by their fears (religion's teachings) and the only consequence is dread (fear) and the fugitive mind (mind trying to deny religion having been tought since early stages of life for example.)
"You built walls to protect you So no one will infect you" Churches.
"You don ’t know when the end is But it ’s coming fast" religion saying "oh noes, its the apocalypse" over everything, when they really dont know when the end of days actualy is.
"It's about judgment. The great paradox is if there isn't a God and you live your life like a good person, you haven't lost anything. If there is a God and you lived your life like a dirtbag, you're screwed. Basically what I'm saying is, 'What if there's no judgment?' I think a lot of times people have gotten up on the moral hilltop and yelled down to the masses down at the bottom of the valley about their spiritual superiority and it just alienates you." (Mustaine, 2001)
As simple as that
this is about a criminal who isnt sure about himself he does whatever he wants and even if he is caught by the police he dosent care but he wonders about like what happens after he dies and his only consequence is himself and his concionce, he takes whatever he wants and hes not sure if in the end he will be judged for it
It's about guilt, "I ought to get caught, because i'm doing something wicked", and it really doesn't matter if there's punishment after death, the dread and the fugitive mind (persecution delirium) "Pursued by those out there, that vanish in thin air" is most of times punishment enough, if you have a functioning supe ego (ie. not a sociopath) guilt won't let you live like you always did "Come a long way to find what you really left behind, You don't know when the end is but it's coming fast".
Dave Mustaine. Need I say more?
I thought this song was about how Capitol Records was screwing over Mustaine, so this was his way of expressing his anger.
naaa hes singing about the way hetfeild fuked him over
Hetfield is shit compared to Mustaine.
ok, ok ok, get it through your heads, in reality and all honesty MUSTAINE SCREWED MUSTAINE! Now, I love Megadeth, they're my favorites, but Mustaine HIMSELF has said it was his addictions and bad temper that got him throw out. Get over it, douchebags,
Now, for my comment, I kinda get the feeling about someone who steals shit, not because he wants to, but because he kinda has to.
