Martyr Lyrics
What I thought was life
Came to an end
Born into a world
I never asked for this
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away!
Born into hardship
World of destruction
Suffer, bastard
Suffer, bastard
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away!
Take me to heaven
Adorn me with wings
Suffer, bastard
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away!
Suffer, bastard...
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
Came to an end
Born into a world
I never asked for this
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away!
World of destruction
Suffer, bastard
Suffer, bastard
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away!
Adorn me with wings
Suffer, bastard
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away!
I've got to get away
I've got to get away
I've got to get away

Its about how Burton C. Bell was bored with his lifestyle. He's got to get away from it and make a fresh start.
on of my favorite FF songs ever
when I first heard it, I thought it was Napalm Death ("exit wounds" era Napalm Death though)
this is bluntly put as a Beatiful Noise, Martyr is one of the most underrated metal songs, this means alot to me since the line "ive got to get away" along side a heavy wall of brutal noise brings peace to my mind.
The song that introduced Fear Factory to the world.
I love this song, I think the Death Metal sound has been lacking from the subsequent Fear Factory albums, but this was pure brutality.
FF was way better in these days. They went a little more clean and less brutal imo. But I very much respect the drummer, he's a machine.
I can relate to this song. I got to get a fresh start.
I figured this song was actually about suicide or at the very least about wanting to die. He "never asked" to be "born into this world." There was a point when he "thought" he would have a great life but now it's as if the world is telling him no, "Suffer" while you're here, you "bastard." He hopes that he can leave this world and go to "heaven." However, based on pirateballoon's post, perhaps there is an interview Burt did that I never saw/heard. Without any input from Burt himself, I would've figured this was about suicide or about a passive death wish at the very least.
This song is relevant to the human condition. This song is also reflective of a person's view regarding the state of the world. The view is constant and unchanging. I know that Burton has stated that he is atheistic and if one were to take that view into account, then it can be uncovered that life, itself, as part of the human condition, has a beginning but ironically our only salvation is to end. I think the bottom line that Burton tries to express with this song is that all life yields suffering and that we are all 'bastards' because we are all brought into a world of suffering without our consent.
@filtinator I think when he screams that he has to get away he is trying to break free from the lack of control that he has with life.

This song is about moving back in with your parents. Once you're there, all you can say is "I've got to get away... I've got to get away... I've got to get AWAY!!"
@hitchfox good work, can definitely see where you are coming from.

How does the title tie in to the song's meaning?
Is he a martyr for rejecting the belief of "life"?
Is it to get away from life? Religion? Others? Society?
