Having existence is likely the greatest challenge any person will endure because of the pain and the suffering and the isolation of being trapped inside your mind and physical constraint. The worst part of it all is to see the ones you love go away and never understand why it happened or feeling regret that you can never undo the event itself or redo the events over again. This song is deeper and darker than one would observe from the surface. At one level this song likely pertains toward a perspective of quandary from someone who is reserved in their acknowledgement of love. But at another level, the romantic lead is either struggling with something and/or seeing the relationship struggle as he feels dragged down under. Will he wait until it is too late and the other has to drown with said romantic lead? Or will the other pull their head out of their butt before he is gone for good? 'His open eyes see everything' and 'don't forget it'! |

Everything is backwards. F.E.A.R. Normal is perverse.... this song is a dwelling of the states of affairs according to one's worldview perspective. To make sense of things is the ultimate connection between the mind/soul and everything else. That i,s consciousness is primarily seeking meaning but when one is confronted in a challenging situation where preconceived meaning is ultimately challenged, the walls of cognitive dissonance rot away. At that point, the conscious being is afflicted with an altered state. |

This song is relevant to the human condition. This song is also reflective of a person's view regarding the state of the world. The view is constant and unchanging. I know that Burton has stated that he is atheistic and if one were to take that view into account, then it can be uncovered that life, itself, as part of the human condition, has a beginning but ironically our only salvation is to end. I think the bottom line that Burton tries to express with this song is that all life yields suffering and that we are all 'bastards' because we are all brought into a world of suffering without our consent. |
