The Four Horsemen Lyrics
By the last breath of the fourth winds blow
Better raise your ears
The sound of hooves knocks at your door
Lock up your wife and children now
It's time to wield the blade
For now you've got some company
The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They've come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
Or choose your fate and die! Ohh yeah yeah!
You have been dying since the day you were born
You know it's all been planned
The quartet of deliverance rides
A sinner once, a sinner twice
No need for confession now
'Cause now you've got the fight of your life
The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They've come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
Or choose your fate and die!
Time, has taken its toll on you
The lines that crack your face
Famine, your body it has torn through
Withered in every place
Pestilence, for what you've had to endure
And what you have put others through
Death, deliverance for you for sure
There is nothing you can do
So gather 'round young warriors now
And saddle up your steeds
Killing scores with demon swords
Now is the death of doers of wrong
Swing the judgment hammer down
Safely inside armor, blood, guts and sweat
The Horsemen are drawing nearer
On the leather steeds they ride
They've come to take your life
On through the dead of night
With the four Horsemen ride
Or choose your fate and die!
Ohh yeah yeah!
Better raise your ears

Could either be about the appocalypse or they could be referring to themselves - the 4 members of Metallica as the 4 horsemen conquereing all.
I don't see how it is about them. There is not a single line that makes a reference to them. Great song though...props to Mustaine.

@King Nothing I kind of agree a bit with it being about them, as this was when they started, and they were probably started out as one of them obnoxious bands who bloats about how great they think they are. There may not be lines referring to them directly but it could just be metaphores

This song is basically saying: The Bible is pure Rock and Roll!
Jesus Rocks!
Churches should be playing more Metallica songs and less boring hymns.
You're kind of right. The bible is a very heavy metal-like book minus the devil horns and pentagrams. If churches played Metallica instead of singing choir, then I would go everyday...

there seems to be a little confusion here. the 4 horsemen spoken of in Revelation 6 (in the Bible) are on the side of Jesus, as Jigokusabre stated. but i`m not sure what the heck Jigokusabre is talking about in the rest of that post. and dr.jacob, i agree, religion definitly has screwed up what was a good thing.
The more you bring it up, the more it will haunt you...focus on the song.

Anyone realize that Dave Mustaine (megadeth) wrote most of the riffing in this song? We all know the story of how they kicked him out.....If ya like this, you should hear "mechanix" by megadeth.
ye he did, and he's credited for it, but the main riff ain't what makes The four horsemen great. It has kick-ass solos and lyrics which were later developed by the band. And anw, mechanix ain't even one of Megadeth's best songs.

Dave should have full credit. Only lyrics and a bridge (which sounds strikingly similar to a distorted Sweet Home Alabama riff) are to Metallica themeselves. However, Metallica's is much more reasonably paced and executed then "mechanix". Dave Mustaine was very pissed the day after he was fired, and decided to make a record that was "heavier, faster, and angrier than anything Metallica will do", which explained why he made the album so fast and almost un-musical. Mehcanix is good, but I personally think he was too pissed off to try to make something better. He did ask Metallica not to...

Anyways, METALLICA AND MEGADETH BOTH KICK ASS!!!
This song is about the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse. simple as that. Four young, spotty, long haired kids, who wanted to play Metal. They put this piece together cos it sounded fucking awesome. Great riffs, face melting solos and the subject is as "Metal" as it gets.
Too bad Jesus would be the one siding with them...
I think that it has to do with the fact that given Christian Doctrine, anyone who truley followed it would not be deserving of heaven, and that they should be struck down by the four horsemen.

It a song about the signs of the end of days
Judging from the lyrics, it seems like Hetfield is telling of a single's persons time spent at the end of days. It's like the story of a person going through all this.

btw famine is war ...
Actually, famine is starvation and loss of resources to nourish yourself.

i believe the number of the horsemen has nothing to do with the band. The song is simple talking about armaggedon.
I agree completely. I like your user name. Is it a play on Forsaken and Taken For? That's kick ass.

@4saken4 Your right. Read Revelation(in the Bible) Real eye opening, and is what the song is based on.
