I strongly disagree that this is some kind of masked or layered song about drugs. The lyrical meaning is very simple and straightforward... which is why it's such a great fucking song.
It is about a man fractured and falling apart inside... even the teetering piano playing reinforces a shattering of hope and spirit in attempting to come to terms with such an inconceivable loss. And although he attempts to carry on with his life, he remains haunted by beautiful memories of what once was and that which will never again be. In the shadow of this great personal tragedy comes the sobering realization that he is but an empty shell of who he formerly was. After searching deep inside himself seeking to regain some semblance of that which he'd lost, he is dismayed to discover that he continually arrives at the same conclusion... THAT THERE ARE NO ANSWERS... and death is the only way to end his suffering.
