Bittersweet Lyrics

Seven sins of wantonness and
everything that's good is gone
Sell it all for glory from the peers
Silicone priestess scratch the back and
twists the knife to bone
Kick against the pricks and scrape the shins
I'm the enemy in the enemies now
Chorus:
Swallowed the pill
Drank to the fill
All these things I carry now
In this bittersweet, in this bittersweet now
Try to hold the world there sinking,
swimming in a paper cup
Try to own the one beneath the skin
Held up to the flame 'till singeing
skin begins to draw and tuck
Never told there's a chance to win
What couldn't be, wouldn't be now
(chorus)
Hold your hands up to the sky and try
so hard to rise above
But everything is beating down
(chorus)

God this song is SO underrated! I think this is their top 3 best overall songs. It's a very haunting song about making a decision you'd rather forget and regret. However, this song does have some rather obscure lyrics that are hard to decipher. Good song though! I love the rugged, bouncy guitar on the verses!

I think it's about selling out in life. Once you realize what is happenning, its too late to do anything about it. I wonder if it is autobiographical to someone in the group in reference to their success. Where are they now?

Well I wasn't sure what wantonness meant so i looked it up and sure enough there were sevon definitions 1. Immoral or unchaste; lewd. 2. Gratuitously cruel; merciless. Marked by unprovoked, gratuitous maliciousness; capricious and unjust: wanton destruction. 3. Unrestrainedly excessive: wanton extravagance; wanton depletion of oil reserves. 4. Luxuriant; overabundant: wanton tresses. 5. Frolicsome; playful. 6. Undisciplined; spoiled. 7. Obsolete. Rebellious; refractory.

I think its how furiousD said with selling out but i also think its about how everyone was trying to hold "them" back.

I would have to agree that this is one of Fuels best songs that is highly under rated, I love it. I would love if Fuel makes a new album.

Well Ive only heard of this song by Fuel so I cant judge the band. But I love this song, and I think its about realizing how much shit you've gotten yourself into and not being able to do anything about it, but commit suicide.

Seven sins of wantonness and everything that's good is gone

  • after commiting "the seven deadly sins" the narrator notices that everything that he once had placed value in is gone.
  • possibly "everything thats good" is in reference to giving up on something you strongly believe in such as (but not nessicarily) religion/beliefs. also the "good" could be a reference to the opposite of a sin. for example he may have lost a girlfriend, friends or money to lust; health to gluttony, etc.

Sell it all for glory from the peers

  • this line seems to be about selling out. giving up your beliefs for the admiration of people around you.

Silicone priestess scratch the back and twists the knife to bone

  • "silicone priestess" is likely a reference to a girl with implants/plastic surgery. scratch the back would be a reference to sleeping with someone, most likely sleeping with someone for their looks, and fake looks at that. "twists the knife to bone" would be a reference to the hurt that comes from sleeping with someone who doesnt really love you. again a repetition of the lust/selling out theme.

Kick against the pricks and scrape the shins

  • "pricks" may be slang for "assholes" or a reference to something that hurts physically. "kick against the pricks" would be to fight against something that either emotionally or physically hurts you, but "scrape the shins" suggests that it only hurts one more to fight it.

The correct lyric is 'kick against the -bricks- and scrape the shins', but otherwise I think your interpretation's spot-on.
