Innocent Lyrics

Satan, you know where I lie
Gently I go, into that good night

All our lives get complicated
Search for pleasure's overrated
Never armed our souls
For what the future would hold
We were innocent
Innocent

Angels, lend me your might
Forfeit all my lives to get just one right

All those colors long since faded
And all our smiles are confiscated
Never were we told
We'd be bought and sold
We were innocent
Yeah

Yeah this prayer is for me tonight
This far down that line
We still ain't got it right

And while confessions not yet stated
Our next sin is contemplated
Never did we know
What the future would hold
Or that we'd be bought and sold
No
We were innocent
Innocent
We were innocent
Ohh

O I noticed that someone mentioned that they thought that wealth/obsession with money be the symbolism in the phrase "search for pleasures overrated" but i really see it meaning how we tend to seek out vices as a coping skills-drugs, alcohol, gambling, sex, etc are the pleasures we search out when really the pleasure we get from said vices is really overrated. then the world gets bleek and depression settles in with the pain, desperation, shame etc ALL TOGETHER FOR SO LONG its wearisome and breaking and when we think about it we just get disgusted cuz we r we r instead of being where we thought we would be at this point in our lives. With all this torment comes a cycle of negativity-leading to more bullshit but alot of people will become cold and angry when they just were tryin to be strong. and in the midst of this devastating epiphany, we realize we let ourselves down but before we can admit that aloud we r already doing the next thing we arent proud of.....man this song is awesome

Song Meaning

It is hard to argue that this song is not spiritual in nature with the numerous references to satan, angels, prayer and sin. A lot of people have commented about the loss of innocence and that is what sin is.

The bible talks at great length about being "enslaved to sin." Or if you like to think of it this way, "bought and sold" by your sinful desires and actions (Romans 7:14). The song touches on the raw frustration that anyone who has ever battled with any kind of sin understands, "Forfeit all my lives, to get just one right." And while confessions not yet stated, our next sin is contemplated" this is exactly what it is like. We are literally enslaved by sin. We get to a point where we are held back by the chains we allowed to be put on us through our actions.

But the truth is that while we are enticed, we have all consented to our mistakes. Our innocence was not stolen, we handed it over for "pleasures overrated." There is only one who can count us as innocent.

My Opinion

I think it is about African slave trade that went on a couple hundred years ago, and how they never expected it. The lines" Never were told, what the future would hold, or that we'd be bought and sold, we were innocent. The reason of say " we were innocent is that they never did anything to deserve what happened.

When i look at this song, i think of what happend in New York on September 11. W were all so innocent and something horrible happend. All our lives get complicated Search for pleasure's overrated Never armed our souls For what the future would hold We were innocent Innocent

Ever since the innocent, has it made your life a littkle tougher? No one dreamed that anything so bad as that would take place. "Angels, lend me your might Forfeit all my lives to get just one right" Anyone who has lost a loved one might turn to god and ask them for help depends on what they all beliefe in.

I agree with snarf_skater. I think this is not only about the beliefs like those you have in God, Satan or who ever, also the one you have in us all...as like what we did to the earth, to ourselves...and how we fuck(ed) us up. This includes the September 11th happening. All in all this is just such an awesome song...

This song epitomizes the darkness within all our hearts that we don't want to fall victim to, but can do nothing more than watch as time and time again we fail.

This is my favorite Fuel song, and it is definitely about a struggle with faith, and I think more specifically maybe someone who is famous and gets burned out and broke "all or smiles are confiscated" "search for pleasures overrated" "never were we told we'd be bought and sold">.. thats just an interpretation one could draw, but definitely a faith struggle

This is one of my favorite Fuel songs. It really resonates with me and the lyrics are so deep. Something about it had bugged me for a long time though. The first couple lines totally reminded me of something. The "Gently I go into that good night" sounded so familiar. Finally I was able to find the reference when my Creative Writing teacher handed out a paper one day. There was a poem written by a man named Dylan Thomas a long time ago and because I thought it might interest some of you, I located the poem and thought I would post it up here. Maybe it will add another layer of meaning to the song for someone.

Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night -- Dylan Thomas

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
