Q&A
Dead And Gone Lyrics
I failed to realize I'd found everything in you
And like a fool I took it all for granted
Was too self-absorbed to see the pain I put you through
And you don't believe in second chances
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is dead and gone?
You were the hope that pulled me through my darkest nights
But every time you needed me I failed you
No longer want to live the life you've left behind
If it means I must face it without you
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is dead and gone?
Dead and gone
You told me once I wrote the soundtrack to your life
But I doubt you'll ever hear this song
I'm so scared it might be the last chance I'll ever have
To say I'm sorry I was wrong
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is dead and gone?
Dead and gone
Dead and gone
Dead and gone
And like a fool I took it all for granted
Was too self-absorbed to see the pain I put you through
And you don't believe in second chances
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is dead and gone?
But every time you needed me I failed you
No longer want to live the life you've left behind
If it means I must face it without you
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is dead and gone?
Dead and gone
But I doubt you'll ever hear this song
I'm so scared it might be the last chance I'll ever have
To say I'm sorry I was wrong
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is gone?
How can I go on
When my last hope is dead and gone?
Dead and gone
Dead and gone
Dead and gone

I think this is about not appreciating a relationship while you were in it and then in hindsight realizing how you acted and regretting it.
In an interview, Chris Hall admitted freely that this song is similar to their earlier hit, "Shame", it touches on the same concept but does so from a more mature standpoint in a way.
Rather than asking how one can exist without the other, he is now admitting his last hope with this person is gone. He is no longer questioning his existence, but rather accepting that whether this person died or simply moved on without them, that their connection literally is "Dead and Gone" and is thus mourning it.
Essentially, one could think of this song as "Shame Part 2" if one desired to, as it touches on the exact subject matter.
That said, this song is a straight up banger. Chris Hall hasn't lost his edge at all. Amazing considering he was 55 at the time of this song's recording, and is now 57. Most vocalists tend to lose their edge, but not him. He sounds every bit as good as he did during this band's heyday, and I'm glad they put together a new album for us all to enjoy.
