A Boy Is a Gun

okay so this song has a lottttt of emotions involved in it. although the relationship the writer and the subject have is unclear, the writer still describes the subject ( the boy) as sweet and his favourite. this whole song is basically based off a lot of irony like i mean a lot of irony. tyler admits that this person make him super duper anxious and that this person is the worst possible choice for him. but he continues to ask him to stay close and near. tyler describes this boy as a gun, because he wants him at his side at all times but that he’s aware of the dangers that come with carrying a gun around. ( that was a good ass analogy if you couldn’t tell) . so i’m just gonna basically analyse and explain the music video bc i like it a lot and it’s a super powerful rendition of the song itself. so the whole thing starts off with igor ( tyler’s alter ego) once again as he wanders angrily and aimlessly and well hopelessly around the prettiest coolest mansion ive literally ever seen (pls buy it for me.) anyway tyler is super vulnerable throughout the whole album and this song really defines it. a boy is a gun is abt uncertainty and resolved emotions and a lot of emotional turmoil. the music video was shot like a wes anderson movie ( my fav director of like all time) and his movies tend to have a much deeper meaning than one might think. anyway, he literally falls on his face which is like a metaphor to show his embarrassment and uneasiness. then it’s shows the arguments between him and his lover. at first the arguments are more like tyler pleading to him and being more frustrated than anything. for example, “take your hoodie off why you hide your face from me” and him being impatient and confused, “make your fucking mind up i am sick of waiting patiently”. then it changed to tyler oscillating between him begging him to “stay right here” and then changing to “ stay the fuck away from me” . then it show him and his lover arguing in the bathroom, displaying how much they’re arguing. tyler’s lover than brings his ex gf to breakfast making tyler angry and confused and embarrassed. he’s completely overcome with emotions and he doesn’t know weither to feel angry or to feel sad bc he felt he wasn’t good enough. he pleads and breaks down but still no one acknowledges his pain and anguish. all these side characters used in the video portray all these problems that led to the downfall of their love. at the end tyler is packing the boys bags, showing that he’s starting to realise he needs to break off from him. tyler starts to realise that anything he says or does to try to talk the boy into staying just goes dead in his ears. tyler then saw the distrust in their relationship and remained heartbroken. ending with the most powerful line in the whole song “stay the fuck away from me”
