Light Years Lyrics

You were waiting outside for me in the sun
Laying down to soak it all in before we had to run
I was always ten feet behind you from the start
Didn't know you were gone 'til we were in the car

Oh, the glory of it all was lost on me
'Til I saw how hard it'd be to reach you
And I would always be light years, light years away from you
Light years, light years away from you

I thought I saw your mother last weekend in the park
It could've been anybody, it was after dark
Everyone was lighting up in the shadows alone
You could've been right there next to me, and I'd have never known

Oh, the glory of it all was lost on me
'Til I saw how hard it'd be to reach you
And I would always be light years, light years away from you
Light years, light years away from you
Light years, light years away from you
Light years, light years away from you

Brilliantly heartbreaking.

Simple, stunning, sad.

It's a short tale of a man who never knew what he had until it was gone.

I see a bright, energetic woman who dragged a casually interested man around... for a while.

The metaphor of distance (I was always ten feet behind you from the start/light years away from you) is surely something that anyone can relate to.

A delightful addition to a family tree of heartwrenching National ballads that includes Guilty Party, Conversation 16 and Val Jester.

Beautiful sad song. I understand it this way:

"You were waiting outside for me in the sun" You, that's a child. The singer is the father. That was the past: He was ten feet behind the kid. But then... the mother and the kid left him.

Years later: "I thought I saw your mother last weekend, in the park It could've been anybody, it was after dark" As said: They aren't together anymore now, the father and the mother.

"You could've been right there next to me, and I'd have never known" There's no contact anymore. The father didn't see his kid for years, and maybe wouldn't recognize her/him.

Really sad story.

@marc113024 This is how I interpreted it.

The chorus is for me is heartbreaking. I think it’s about someone who has died. I think that as space is continually expanding and we move through it on earth our memories get left behind, still existing, even after death, in a point of time and space that we could never get back to because we would have to move faster than the speed of light to be able to. So these memories will always be light years away. It’s something I have felt since before I ever heard this track so I was mesmerised when I heard it. It may be not what the band meant when they wrote it but that’s how it makes me feel.
