Maybe Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Long gone, the days of summer
In L.A. it stretches longer
Fading, waiting
Try to heal but the pain it won't go
Start with less, always seems to cost more
Hating, breaking

[Pre-Chorus]
Remember come December
One day can last forever
Ain't nowhere that's safe for a lowly pretender
I'm shooting straight for the target center

[Chorus]
Maybe you should know
I'm feeling lonely
And I'm tired, oh yeah
Maybe I should go
Got no desire
To watch the last tear fall
Maybe this will show
I'm reeling, empty
Uninspired, oh yeah
Maybe I don't know
You anymore
And I'm smiling
Our burden is untied
Let it die

[Verse 2]
I'd be lying if I said it felt right
Even though I got a dog in this fight
Wounded, losing
People talk in and out their words go
To be the one from where the wind it does blow
Hounded, surrounded

[Pre-Chorus]
Remember come December
One life can live forever
Ain't nowhere that's safe for a lowly pretender
I'm shooting straight for the target center

[Chorus]
Maybe you should know
I'm feeling lonely
And I'm tired, oh yeah
Maybe I should go
Got no desire
To watch the last tear fall
Maybe this will show
I'm reeling, empty
Uninspired, oh yeah
Maybe I don't know
You anymore
And I'm smiling
Our burden is untied
Let it die

[Guitar Solo]

[Chorus]
Maybe you should know
I'm feeling lonely
And I'm tired, oh yeah
Maybe I should go
Got no desire to watch the last tear fall
Maybe this will show
I'm reeling, empty
Uninspired, oh yeah
Maybe I don't know
You anymore
And I'm smiling
Our burden is untied
Let it die

Cover art for Maybe lyrics by Alice in Chains

This song hit me the most from the new album (Rainier Fog). I feel like it's a meta commentary on Jerry's current feelings of moving on with the band since the late 90s / early 2000s. There are some refences to the band's final days in the lyrics:

"Even though I got a dog in this fight Wounded, losing People talk in and out their words go To be the one from where the wind it does blow Hounded, surrounded "

The band's final album with Layne Staley has a dog on the cover art that is missing a leg and has sickly, yellow eyes. Around that time the band had to deal with a lot of negative comments regarding Staley's losing battle with heroin addiction, which ultimately took his life after a few years. Also this is one of the songs on the album which has only Jerry on lead vocals, which makes me think this is his message and has to be sung by him, along with the more intimate, stripped down semi-acoustic instrumental.

"Maybe this will show I'm reeling, empty Uninspired, oh yeah Maybe I don't know You anymore And I'm smiling Our burden is untied Let it die"

In the interviews around the new album Jerry says he's really happy and content with this new album, but I think this line is directed to us, the fans. I think he has considered this to be the last album from the band during the writing. He feels lonely - he lost many friends in his lifetime. He lost Layne, he lost Starr and most recently he lost Vinnie Paul. He feels uninspired and hollow and his sentiment is that he doesn't know the person in front of him - but this could very well be the band.

My Interpretation

@dyomaeth I agree with most of what you wrote and also feel that Jerry has been very personal with the lyrics on RF\r\nI really think this is a killer album and I pick up all sorts of references to their history and journey prior to this album.\r\nNot the one you know seems a reference to how fans have dismissed anything AIC have done post Layne and reading the youtube comments really gets my blood boiling sometimes so it must get to Jerry at times as well.

@dyomaeth wow I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Jerry's lyrics (and of course Laynes) have always held deep deep meaning for me and have really hit home on many occasions. Everything post Layne seems to me that Jerry is speaking to Layne in some way, shape or form.

( oops I hit the wrong button too soon didn't finish my thought) Jerry has never shied away from telling us how he really feels in his lyrics. And I'm sure he has "had it up to here" with the ghost of Lane looming over him & the guys, not to mention everyone who interviews him constantly asking about Layne, or how it relates to Layne, or what would Layne think about, this etc. It's got to be extremely wearing and mentally exhausting knowing that you always have this burden, this musical albatross hanging over your head every moment. . Even though...
