What It Is (Jonathan Davis Solo) Lyrics
Pretty soon you have to deal
With the truth behind the way you feel
And I'd rather never know
I would do anything anything
Not to bring who I am to meet me
This useless suffering
Ugly part of me is screwing me
As it feeds me
But it is what it is
You don't know how to live with what it is
But it is what it is
It may seem impossible
But I will embrace who I really am
If it's a son of a bitch or a terrified kid
Then that's what it is
Pretty soon you'll have to face
You're a virus called the human race
And I'll never never know
I have done everything everything
Not to feel what it is I'm feeling
This basement devil is kicking the ass
Of my angel on the ceiling
But it is what it is
You don't know how to live with what it is
But it is what it is
It may seem impossible
But I will embrace who I really am
If it's a son of a bitch or a terrified kid
Then that's what it is
Don't push me, don't kill me
What it is cause it is what it is
Don't play games, don't mess with
What it is cause it is what it is
Don't ask me, don't tell me
What it is cause it is what it is
Don't push me, don't kill me
What it is cause it is what it is
Don't run from where you come from
Cause it is what it is
And I
And I
But it is what it is
You don't know how to live with what it is
But it is what it is
It may seem impossible
But I will embrace who I really am
If it's a son of a bitch or a terrified kid

This to me is a song about facing ones own demons. Sometimes the hardest thing to do in life, is having to come face to face with our own selves. That can be the darkest time, admitting to our own worst mistakes and being honest to ourselves about who we are. No one is perfect and this song is saying, I may be far from perfect but I am still me and I can finally live with that. He's also saying to the world as whole who is always casting judgement, look - don't kill me for being only human - it is what it is.
Obviously this song is about accepting who you are, becoming comfortable with your personality and all its sides.
But in my opinion, Jonathan also deals with the human nature he does not see as something good: "Pretty soon you'll have to face/ you're a Virus called the human race". In many cases your nature is what makes you do things your Moral Standards would actually forbid. The writer uses the Picture of a house in order to explain his sight on the Problem: The "Basement devil" represents the human nature on which his personality is build: it is "kicking the ass" of the "angel on the ceiling" who I think is the morality the inhabitant of the house between (the conscious personality) wants to follow, but often can't.
This strongly reminds me of Sigmund Freud's theory of ego, superego and id: In this case the ego would be the house's inhabitant caught between his superego and the id below who often wins against the superego.
Anyway, the song has a strong message - I really appreciate it.
