Welcome to my dark side
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)

Welcome to my dark side
It's gonna be a long night
Oh, la, la, la, la

Welcome to my darkness, I been here a while
Clouding up the sunlight, hurting for a smile
Or something
But something always turns into nothing

Oh, I drain your life
'Til there's nothing left but your blood shot eyes
Oh, I take my time
'Til I show you how I feel inside

Welcome to my, welcome to my
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my dark side
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)

I can be your reckless
You can be my stake
I can be your heartache
You can be my shame
When you're feeling reckless
When you're feeling chained
When there's nothing left but pain

Welcome to my dark side
We're gonna have a good time
Oh, la, la, la, la

Acting like I'm heartless, I do it all the time
That don't mean I'm scarless, that don't mean I'm fine
But you'll see
When someone else makes you this way

Oh, I drain your life
'Til there's nothing left but your blood shot eyes
Oh, I take my time
'Til I show you how I feel inside

Welcome to my, welcome to my
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my dark side
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)

I can be your reckless
You can be my stake
I can be your heartache
You can be my shame
When you're feeling reckless
When you're feeling chained
When there's nothing left but pain

Welcome to my dark side
Welcome to my dark side
Welcome to my dark side
Welcome to my dark side

Welcome to my (ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my (ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my (ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my (ooh-ooh)

I can be your reckless
You can be my stake
I can be your heartache
You can be my shame
When you're feeling reckless
When you're feeling chained
Welcome to my (ooh-ooh)

Welcome to my dark side
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my dark side
(Ooh-ooh, ooh-ooh)
Welcome to my dark side

    Song Meaning

I think that, along with the obvious meaning of taking someone into a destructive relationship, this has undertones of heavy drug use

    Welcome to my dark side

Welcome to the side of me I hide from everyone, my drug addiction.

It's gonna be a long night

As many drug filled nights are

Welcome to my darkness, I been here a while Clouding up the sunlight, hurting for a smile

I've been here a while burying my pain in addiction.

Oh, I drain your life 'til there's nothing left but your blood shot eyes Oh, I take my time 'til I show you how I feel inside

I'll lead you on a binge that will leave you feeling as empty as me.

I can be your reckless, you can be my stake I can be your heartache, you can be my shame When you're feeling reckless, when you're feeling chained When there's nothing left but pain

This is all just talking about how she can take him into this world and he can feel reckless with her, she can feel ashamed, because when you hide your addiction away it eats up at you so better to feel ashamed, and this will slowly eat away a both of them, but when there is nothing left but pain.

    Welcome to my dark side

And now, after being dragged through hell, he can understand why she turns to these substances. The second chorus is introducing him to her Darkside again, once there is nothing left but pain, so he can finally see the cycle.

Acting like I'm heartless, I do it all the time That don't mean I'm scarless, that don't mean I'm fine But you'll see, when someone else makes you this way You'll see why I am an addict, someone else made me this way and now I'm doing it to you.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Both as a standalone and as part of the DSOTS album, you can take this lyric as read. As a matter of public record, Jourgensen's drug intake was legendary even in the 1980s. By the late 90s, in his own words, he was grappling with massive addiction issues and had lost almost everything: friends, spouse, money and had nearly died more than once. "Dark Side of the Spoon" is a both funny & sad title for an album made by a musical genius who was losing the plot; and this song is a message to his fans & friends saying he knows it. It's painful to listen to so I'm glad the "Keith Richards of industrial metals" wised up and cleaned up. Well done sir.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer

In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
