To me the song is so applicable to helping a friend with a really difficult personal time, could be serious depression, drug rehab, or grief. The whole concept is one of support, protection, caring. Then sending out into the world healed and independent after a difficult time "when you won't be needing me". It's sad but beautiful as it encapsulates the feeling of being totally essential to someone, but only temporarily.
