Fear of the Water Lyrics

Some ancient call
That I've answered before
It lives in my walls
And it's under the floor
If this was meant for me why does it hurt so much
And if you're not made for me then why did we fall in love

A knock at my door
I thought I was alone
Unaware of what I thought I needed
I dropped like a stone
If I'm not mistaken then I was the last to know
And if you return for me I'd never want for more

You're dislocated, don't be like that
And you smile when you dive in,
like you're never coming back
So hold my body, yeah hold my breath
See your face when I blackout, I'm never coming back
(Fear of the water x2)

You're dislocated, don't be like that
And you smile when you dive in,
like you're never coming back
So hold my body, yeah hold my breath
See your face when I blackout, I'm never coming back
(Fear of the water x2)

You're dislocated, don't be like that
And you smile when you dive in,
like you're never coming back
So hold my body, yeah hold my breath
See your face when I blackout, I'm never coming back
(Fear of the water x2)

My interpretation of this song... is fairly straight forward. The singer is agonizing over a break up. The singer cannot seem to accept the truth of it, they are still deeply in love- yet the other individual is not. The person the singer loves is ending the relationship and they are detached. The singer is hurt by the other person's positive demeanor when they interact, it's a foretelling body language that implies the break up's finality... the lover smiling after a break up is never coming back. The singer is in anguish. This is a painful song for me, and anyone else who has been in this situation may read into the song the same way. Hits a it too close to home for me to listen to without tears, but it is a beautiful song never the less.

The correct lyric is actually:

"And you smile when you dive in, like you're never coming back"

This is important. He is singing of his departing lover's smile as they dive into the water-- but his own paralyzing fear of it.

I personally interpret the song to be about a person who has been broken up with. He's still deeply in love and longing for them to come back. He didn't see the break up coming, he was "the last to know." Now his love is "dislocated" and they are happily diving back into the water to move on. The singer is in agony. He sees his ex-lover's face when he closes his eyes. He wishes for them to hold him. He is grieving, alone, heartbroken, and scared.

I think he was the last to realize what they had: a deeply spiritual connection. He was really hurt in the past and sees falling in love as something painful. It's painful because he loses himself instead of loving himself and having enough left over to offer another. She was willing to dive in. He wasn't.

She dove in anyways and found love and connection elsewhere. He's been left behind. She'll never complete him, and deep down, he knows that. In a way, he helped her because she was just like him. He was afraid of what he saw in her because it reminded him of how he was with the toxic person he was with that led to him losing touch with himself completely.

He's so passive about trying to get her back because he hasn't changed and doesn't know how to do that. He holds on to some irrational dream that everything would be magically fixed if they were together, and it's the exact attitude he couldn't stand in her when she was still wanting to lose herself in him. He was trying to pretend that he was completely self-sufficient and didn't need anyone, but he was lying to himself and to her.

I don't see her as diving into another relationship. I think she dove into the love of God and learned to love herself by accepting and feeling God's love. She didn't lose herself in God's love because it's not like human love.

She found a life that completes her without him, and he doesn't believe that healthy love (two complete people coming together who already have the love they need on their own and with God) is possible. So, she won't come back because he thinks that you lose yourself if you dive into God's love just like you lose yourself in people.

He's afraid to dive into God's love because his view of God is based on unhealthy caregivers growing up. She used to have the same fear, but she dove in anyways. His fear of the water is a fear of spirituality and the pure love of God.

They are spiritually connected by design to draw them closer to God. It's the only way they'll ever be healthy enough for each other.

That's my take on this song.

hi, sadly i just found out about this song a few months ago, i wish i heard of it before. But what if it’s about suicide acts after the break up?

“you smile when you dive in, like you’re never coming back” isn’t that like diving into water and drowning to not come back for good? and as he’s drowning he sees flashbacks as it says “ see your face when i black out, i’m never coming back”

@mushu10536 THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT ITS ABOUT! I haven't seen anyone else get this. Where's my love is the first part of this story and explains his lover's suicide. And this song is his feelings thereafter.

@mushu10536 i always got the same feeling out of this song. I mean even the music alone to me conveys way more than just a break up. Its as if he is then talking to the water itself symbolising his gone lover, to hold ( embrace ) his body and hold his breath ( suffocate) untill he blacks out and he too, is never coming back. And it created the fear of water or that phobia. Maybe the ancient call is also is referring to his tendencies of joining his lover?

Maybe they both smoke heroin. He is worried about her addiction but he uses it as well. The knock at the door might have been something about what happened after he had been sober for a time and then she returned with it. The first phrase could be about addiction and attachment and how what we are familiar with becomes meaningful/love.
