Halo on Fire Lyrics
Obey, obey
Come won't you stay
Sincere, sincere
All ends in tears
Endure, endure
Thoughts most in impure
Concede, concede
But both shall we bleed
Oh, halo on fire
The midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire
Creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light
For the darkness won't go away
Fast, is desire
Turn out the light
Halo on fire
Allure, allure
Sweetness obscure
Abide, abide
Secrets inside
Deprive, deprive
To feel so alive
Obey, obey
Just don't turn away
Oh, halo on fire
The midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire
Creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light
For the darkness won't go away
Fast, is desire
Turn out the light
Halo on fire
Prayers cannot get through
Return to sender
Unto which of you
Shall I surrender
Twisting in disguise
Dark resurrection
Lighting up the skies
Wicked perfection
Too dark too sleep
Can't slip away
Open or close
My eyes betray
Beyond the black
Come won't you stay
Hello darkness, say goodbye
Hello darkness, say goodbye
Hello darkness, say goodbye
Come won't you stay
Sincere, sincere
All ends in tears
Endure, endure
Thoughts most in impure
Concede, concede
But both shall we bleed
The midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire
Creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light
For the darkness won't go away
Fast, is desire
Turn out the light
Halo on fire
Sweetness obscure
Abide, abide
Secrets inside
Deprive, deprive
To feel so alive
Obey, obey
Just don't turn away
The midnight knows it well
Fast, is desire
Creates another hell
I fear to turn on the light
For the darkness won't go away
Fast, is desire
Turn out the light
Halo on fire
Return to sender
Unto which of you
Shall I surrender
Dark resurrection
Lighting up the skies
Wicked perfection
Can't slip away
Open or close
My eyes betray
Beyond the black
Come won't you stay

I believe this song touches the theme of childhood trauma and in a way can be seen as a spiritual successor to the song Enter Sandman. Both songs are about a child (my interpretation) going to sleep but dark thoughts making sleep impossible. The darkness doesnt just come from the night but are way worse - they wont go away even when the light is turned on, and in a way the night becomes a comfort where the darkness can live its own life without confronting the real world. Both songs have religious references ("halo on fire", "prayers cannot get through", "pray the lord my soul to keep" etc.). It is known that James Hetfield was brought up as a christian scientist which he came to hate as their belief played a part in his mothers death to illness (not allowing medicine but only healing thorugh prayer etc).
The end of the song is interesting with the lyrics "Hello darkness, say goodbye". In themselfes this can be interpreted in many ways - but the music that is played when these lines are sung are epic and uplifting. This indicates that the protagonist of the song have found a way out of the darkness - the darkness is still there for sure but he is now able to recognise it and say both hello and goodbye to it. This is a very different ending when compared to Enter Sandman that ends on a darker note. Halo on Fire thus becomes a song not only about trauma but about overcoming it as well.
The title is actually "Halo on Fire"

My interpretation differs from the one by Rasmus. I think this song is simply about sex and infidelity.
Could it be biographical? Possibly, James has had issues in the past, but here is what makes me think that.
The song starts with 'Obey'. Traditional marriage vows where he promises to 'Love, honour and Obey', but as sincere as he is he knows that it's going to end in tears because he can't resist other women. He concedes to the temptation and both he and the wife he's cheating on bleed from guilt.
His halo is on fire because he's perceived as being the good guy, the happily married man who is far from it. He feels massive guilt over this and lies in bed at night (with or without the wife) knowing he's done wrong. He fears to turn on the light because the woman next to him isn't who it should be, she's that 'darkness', the side of him addicted to sex.
The rest of the song continues with the struggle, he needs the sex to feel alive but the guilt eats away at him. He goes back to the vows, Obey. He's begging his wife to not turn away from him and forgive him.
Open or closed my eyes betray. He can't hide the truth from her, he asks her to stay but the ending of the song suggests he's saying goodbye to her and hello to the darkness thats now in his life.
As James said it in the discussion in Metallica's blog, https://www.metallica.com/blog/so-what-article/436104/james-hetfield-the-hardwired-lyrics-discussion
"You can plug anything into that one really. Obviously “Halo On Fire,” there’s a juxtaposition in all of us, good, evil, and when does that come out, when does it show itself? Some people portray themselves as real saints, [and] the more their darkness is, the more they have to portray themselves as saints. So you’re basically getting away from the real “you,” like you’re making up for all of this [stuff] that you think is really bad. "
I believe this song is about overcoming one’s temptations/predispositions regarding sins/mistakes. This person is clearly tormented by their guilt and shame and feels controlled by whatever moral failure they have.
This person is sad and depressed, but still trying to get rid of their darkness (maybe even in unhealthy ways if you take “both shall we bleed” a little more literally). Idk about you, readers, but when I feel depressed, it’s hard to sleep at night, so this is why the midnight knows this person’s halo on fire so well. They’re trying to be better or, at least, fake it, but their Halo on Fire doesn’t let them forget their guilt, sadness, shame or whatever bad feelings they have.
If they give in to their desire, they know they’ll just feel bad about it later (which is why the desire “creates another hell”).
The ending of the song seems like this person getting that ‘second wind’ to keep fighting their inner darkness, trying to get rid of it, trying to be better. They may have been desperate and tired, but they didn’t give up at the end.
Personally, I think this is, without a doubt, the best song of the album. Definitely in my top 10 of Metallica songs for the lyrics alone. I like them a lot, and I think what I said here fits well with James’ comment someone else posted.
In my point of view, this song encompasses our daily routine when we all struggle to fight with our own responsibilities troubles, anxieties etc. In addition let's not forget that nowadays most people are fighting with depression or another similar psychological disorders. On top of that let 's not ignore some others are doomed to be living in bad families facing pressure and misbehaving. The last punch that the girl gets and falls down, is the concept of the whole song. We all have good and bad days, times etc, the thing is that we have to stand up and fight back under any circumstances.
I think the song describes the life of a lion in a circus. It has to obey, can not turn away, and it has to jump through a hoop on fire. When it tries to sleep during nights, it keeps seeing the hoop like a halo over there. At the final stage, it dies, finally reaching to the real darkness. It says hello darkness and goodbye to the world.
I agree with a lot from the previous comments that mention childhood trauma and sexual references. The moment I heard the song I thought the lyrics are about domestic, sexual abuse of a child, so to me this is one of the darkest songs ever recorded. I think the title is a reference to the irreversible loss of innocence.
The song starts off from the abuser’s perspective: “obey/endure/concede” “come won’t you stay”, “All ends in tears”, “Thoughts most in impure”. Terrifying… I feel there’s a strong sense of guilt and struggle on the abuse’s part throughout (“both shall we bleed”, “deprive to feel so alive”), but their dark side wins (“wicked perfection”, “dark resurrection”).
The chorus is from the victim’s perspective (“ I fear to turn on the light, for the darkness won't go away”). “The midnight knows it well” suggests that abuse happens regularly. The helplessness of the victim knowing what’s coming to them but being unable to do anything about it is harrowing.
The “ Prayers cannot get through..” part could be interpreted as either person’s thoughts.
Then this: “Too dark too sleep Can't slip away Open or close My eyes betray”
The victim desperately trying and failing to hide their fear to avoid exciting the abuser. I think the songs ends with the victim’s death, their only escape, either because they succumb to injuries or they gave up the hopeless fight. “Hello darkness, say goodbye”. Brutal..
