This song to me is about convincing someone to live and see purpose in their life.

Suicide is never a solution. I cried when I came to the realization that you are the one I want to spend my life, you are the one I want to save.
I think Anthony masterfully closes the song with ayo ayo ayo kiss this. It signifies the beginning of a relationship,just like a first kiss. Its obvious that there isn't a happy story preceding this relationship, but that Anthony is a rescuer and has realized his role and given someone purpose to live.
The Bass/Guitar/Drums outro is one of the most stimulating RHCP outros yet, and is empowering in the same way two people coming together to make a life can be.
I really think this song is a masterpiece that shows what this band is capable of in its new direction.
Love this song, that guitar at the end is killer. Along with a few other songs on this album, I think this song is about Kiedis' two-year relationship with Australian model Helena Vestergaard. The end of it "say goodbye my love", the way he felt when they were together, how young she was (she was only 19 or 20 when they first got together I think) "Somehow you made your way to my decade".
@60_miles_an_hour I think it's probably mostly about her, but I think the fact that it's plural "angels", and there's mention of some other very specific things makes it more about lots of girls he's known than have disappeared from Anthony's life in one way or another. This song can make me extremely sad. I love it!

I agree with 60_miles_an_hour, it's about his ex Helena Vestergaard. I think it's a really beautiful song, and very mighty in concert.
My favorite lyric is "Somehow you made your way to my decade". I'm in a similar situation right now (not as extreme age difference though) so this song really gets to me.

Definitively this song is about ManBearPig. “In the sun I see you with your guard down” represents a bear during hunting season scavenging for berries, unaware there are recreational hunters who want to “suicide” the poor creature. “Number one you’re moving to a hard time” means that man has invaded bear country and that bears will have a harder time surviving in its natural environment. “Kicking hard looking for a rescue...” is a metaphor for a pig about to get slaughtered and meat harvested. “Watch me starve was never to impress you” is about him trying to convert to being a vegan but his significant other is a full blown meat eater. “Somehow you made your way to my decade” represents the fact that wildlife is becoming more endangered by “the decade” so he’s so bewildered that he saw a ManBearPig. “Sticky fingers find a way to take her” means his fingers are sticky after eating said ManBearPig. “Your flickering is more than just a small flame, Welcome to the party it’s a ball game...Well this this self explanatory.
