It's about somebody who was scared to be herself and had "clipped wings" and felt like she was "a broken thing". She was scared to be judged and didn't express herself, but finally decided not to care about other's opinion ("I don't care if I sing off key") and to do something for herself and not for somebody who really didn't care about her as a person ("I sing for me") and finally she was able to "shout it out like a bird set free"...
I know Sia doesn't sing about herself in this song, she's written it for Adele originally, not for herself, but I like thinking about this song this way.
