Who knew darkness could be sentient?
Who knew it could weigh so much?
Who knew it could close in around you?
Who knew it could press and touch?
It suffocates, it buries you alive,
It filters night, it is a funnel.
It shuts your senses down, makes you realise,
There is no light at the end of the tunnel.
It’s like walking through tar,
It’s like swimming through syrup,
It’s like climbing a mountain that’s falling, falling.
It’s like running too far,
It’s like thinking you’ll give up,
It’s like a non-existent voice that’s calling, calling.
Who knew darkness had cold fingers?
Who knew it had a grip on me?
And when it’s gone, the ice still lingers,
When will daylight set me free?
It neglects you, makes you feel left out,
It withholds secrets from you,
Paranoia sets in, what are they talking about?
It scolds and yells til you turn blue.
