I Don't Want To Change You Lyrics
Wherever you are
Know that I adore you
No matter how far
Well, I can go before you
And if ever you need someone
Well, not that you need helping
But if ever you want someone
Know that I am willing
Oh and
I don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change your mind
I just came across a manger
Out among the danger
Somewhere in a stranger's eye
Wherever you go
Well I can always follow
I can feed this real slow
If it's a lot to swallow
If you just wanna be alone
I can wait without waiting
If you want me to let this go
Well I am more than willing
Oh 'cause
I don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change your mind
I just came across a manger
Out among the danger
Somewhere in a stranger's eye
Oh and I don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change your mind
I just came across a manger
Out among the danger
Somewhere in a stranger's eye
I'd never been with anyone
In the way I've been with you
But if love is not for fun,
Then it's doomed
'cause water races, water races down
The waterfalls
Oh water races, water races down
The waterfall
And I don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change your mind
I just came across some manger
Where there is no danger
Where love has eyes and is not blind
Know that I adore you
No matter how far
Well, I can go before you
And if ever you need someone
Well, not that you need helping
But if ever you want someone
Know that I am willing
I don't wanna change you, I
Don't wanna change you, I

I think this is about getting ahead of yourself in a new relationship, caught up in a swirl of feelings that aren't wholly reciprocated. The singer makes his willingness to jump right in abundantly clear, despite getting a sense that their object of desire might not share their enthusiasm.
I find this is a very universal, heartbreaking feeling. You like someone, just as they are, and you want them so badly but it's OK if they don't want you back in that same way right now. You don't wish them ill. You still think they're swell. You just desperately need to move on. (Unless they call, and then you'll drop everything - dignity and all - to be with them.)
@Ade I think you nailed it! Right now I am in this exact situation that Damien sings about here and ironically I heard this song today and for the first time listened to the lyrics, which I could relate to so much atm. I came here to post what you wrote and you said it beautifully.

what your describing does not sound like a relationship to me.

In a concert in Cologne yesterday he stated that sometime in his life he realised that you usually have an image in your head how that person is or how they should be, and then when you realise that this person is not what you thought of it you become angry or frustrated. And he added that he does a lot better now with people since he stopped doing that. This is a song about not wanting to change someone to fit yourself and be happy in the process.
The relationship is over but it still remains deep somewhere inside of us. Time has passed by and after we lived our lives in different ways with a twisted heart, we finally met each other. The passion now gave way to reason, aware this time of all it can be, I can accept all kind of situations, including the way you are (or always were) and the moment we live in, it doesn't matter now.
To me, it's about forgiveness. You more than ready to forgive someone who is unwilling to forgive their self. You accept this person as they are and "don't want to change" them, even though you know the person is not perfect (because "love has eyes & is not blind" to the mistakes made). Also, you don't mind waiting, if the person you love needs more time to forgive themselves or mend their mistakes; you'll still love them. The part about a manger suggests the beginning of forgiveness , to me, just because that's where Jesus began his life on earth to make our forgiveness possible. That bit does seem precarious though.
@KayleyG I completely agree with you maybe because I´m going exactly through that. Its hard when you accept the other person more than they accept themselves. And I relate this song to "The Box" where even though he is trying to accept the person as it is, its hurting him emotionally to live within the box that the other person has over him

For me, this song is about desperation. The kind you feel when you have broken up with someone. Its like he is chanting to himself that he doesn't want to change the person he loves as a mantra to reassure himself more than the person. It is like realizing that the differences are great but the hurt of losing is even greater. Hence all the "I can"s in the song.
