I like to imagine this is about a teacher (full disclosure: I am a teacher) in a zombie-like post-apocalypse where many, many former students are roaming the town, and this teacher can't accept the fact that these "kids that [they] once knew" are now all "dead hearts." They had light inside their eyes, they had light inside their eyes. |

| Damien Rice – I Don't Want To Change You Lyrics

I think this is about getting ahead of yourself in a new relationship, caught up in a swirl of feelings that aren't wholly reciprocated. The singer makes his willingness to jump right in abundantly clear, despite getting a sense that their object of desire might not share their enthusiasm.
I find this is a very universal, heartbreaking feeling. You like someone, just as they are, and you want them so badly but it's OK if they don't want you back in that same way right now. You don't wish them ill. You still think they're swell. You just desperately need to move on. (Unless they call, and then you'll drop everything - dignity and all - to be with them.) |

It's silent without you
It burns through
Each and every day
It takes my breath away
So lonely without you
There's no view
Colors just fade to gray
It takes my breath away |

| Thursday – This Song Brought to You by a Falling Bomb Lyrics
| 21 years ago

I have a different take on this. I've always thought it was a made-up point-of-view of a guy in a war-torn place (fitting with the theme of the album), whose lover won't see things as they are. Hence the repeated "do you hear".
He sees desolation all around him, and wants to make the most of whatever time he's given until another bomb strikes. ("Shut the window, love. Keep the world outside. I don't wanna think about anyone.")
But his partner doesn't realize the end is nearer and nearer ("footsteps are getting louder"), and it's killing him. |

Has anyone tried to sing along the second verse? Can you do the dive before the chorus, ya know, 'backwards into a wall of fire'? That's damn hard, lol. |

This song... Man, this song resolved my eternal dilemma of picking a favorite band when asked. I used to always say I couldn't pick just one favorite, and ended up spurting dozens of names, forgetting half those I meant to mention. I know now, without the trace of a doubt, that Matthew Good really *is* my one and only favorite artist. |

Now, see, I hate when songs get overplayed by fucking 'hip' radio stations, but I actually think it would benefit the world if this one got some nationwide (or better yet, worldwide) FM exposure. ::shrugs:: I basically just think every one needs to hear these lyrics. |

wow. that one's... amazing, just like the rest of them. the lyrics kick ass, but then again, when don't Matt's lyrics turn your guts upside down with that disturbingly blunt truth of theirs? |

wow, that song is addictive. as for the meaning, i guess it's about a sick man about to die ("IV keeping time beside my bed" /.../ "i long to be dead"). he's delirious half the time ("spaceman in my basement" /.../ "cartoon killer in my living room"), but still has stuff he's gotta say before he goes, i.e. the world is fucked = tv networks throw bigass charity balls for the third world, but how the hell do amputee girls get their limbs back? they probably don't give a flying fuck for the pity parties, so we should just stop trying to be the saviors and look good at the expense of their pride. they're carefree, legs or no legs, and we're not helping in any way at all, so let's stop trying to be heroes. aaaalllso, religion's a mighty fucked-up thing, if you got a jesus **dartboard** in your freaking room; as in, you're allegedly worshipping all things holy and sacred yet you don't think twice about nudity in front of *the* icon most representative of your supposed faith. what the hell is up with that? you really don't know jack, so please don't act to like you know it all ("you're bad at life but good in a vacuum"). and last and most obvious, the "traffic jams" are the restless thoughts running through his mind ceaselessly, driving him literally insane (which fits in the delirium theory)...
wow, that was long-winded. but eh, that's what i think. |

| Our Lady Peace – Not Enough Lyrics

I pretty much agree with Ashley on the depression thing : He's really, really supportive of her, and reassuring. He wishes the best for her, and hopes she'll find a way to be happy again. He tries his best to be there, but alas, it's 'not enough' to her, because she can never get 'what she wants, what she lost,' again. Everything he gives her, it's all she has now. It's 'what she's got, what she needs, what she loves, what she has'. It's real, but it's still 'not enough.'
How sad as I think it is, I still adore this song. Amazing. |
