Song for Someone Lyrics
I have some scars from where I’ve been
You got eyes that can see right through me
You’re not afraid of anything they’ve seen
That I would feel nothing
The first time
How these cuts heal
But in you I’ve found a rhyme
And there is a world we can’t always be
If there is a dark that we shouldn’t doubt
And there is a light, don’t let it go out
A song for someone
This is a song
Song for someone
A conversation only we could make
You break it into my imagination
Whatever’s in there it’s yours to take
Nothing the first time
You were slow to heal
But this could be the night
And there is a world we can’t always be
If there is a dark within and without
And there is a light, don’t let it go out
A song for someone
This is a song
This is a song for someone
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Yeah!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
From your Hill of Calvary
And I’m a long way
From where I was, where I need to be
And there is a world we can’t always be
If there is a kiss I stole from your mouth
And there is a light don’t let it go out

I agree with ProvidenceXz -- beautiful song, very powerful. It is an interesting contrast to another song on the album: Every Breaking Wave. That song seems to be pretty clearly about difficulty making a commitment in a relationship -- a desire to try and build a lasting relationship. This song is about the pains and hurts we all experience in life and how that can make us cautious, but it is also hopeful and a song about reaching out to someone else. The admonition to not let the light go out -- don't give up hope even though we have suffered, the acceptance of each other "you're not afraid of anything they've seen", the feeling of being understood by someone else and the theme of healing from pain are all very powerful elements of the song. I also just love some of the poetry of these lyrics: "You break and enter my imagination, whatever's in there, it's yours to take", and the kiss stolen from her mouth....really well done, U2.

These guys have been making music almost as long as I've been alive.
How is it that they're still so good after all tese years?
@SusanBassPlayer theyve been making music for 24 years longer than ive been alive! They will forever remain awesome in my eyes!

Only six comments?! This is the beautifullest song ever! I cry every time I hear it! U2 rulz!
@jonjonwinny what is so beautiful about the song? What lyrics (or their meaning) makes you cry??

@sokorny I cried because I found the song beautiful. I am rather sensitive when it comes to music. It was a year ago that I cried to it, I can't remember why, but I don't cry to it anymore. Maybe it was the lyrics "if there is a dark now we shouldn't doubt then there is a light don't let it go out". I was hopeless and messed up back then and that was hopeful so maybe that's why I found it beautiful? Or maybe because the song is describing a person that I didn't have but thought I needed in...

It doesn't have the same effect on me as it used to but the way the song is sung is pretty beautiful.

what do they mean by 'I was told I'd feel nothing the first time'?
@jonjonwinny I've always thought this was about sex, actually. Women are told it will hurt, men are told it goes too quickly the first time to be good. Both things are true and false.

@samanthata, I am totally w/you in feeling that this song is about drug addiction....to me, you are SO SPOT ON!!

@jonjonwinny, IMO, the line you're asking about: "I was told I'd feel nothing the first time" is, actually: Referring to a statement that A LOT of addicts hear/make, sort of in response to the popular myth that just a one-time (the absolute first) use of any of the hardcore-illicit drugs immediately gets all of your love and adoration and turns you into a full-blown addict/junkie...so, you hear alot of addicts (past and/or present!) saying that the truth of the...

Hope this helps to make more sense of the song/line for anyone who needs/wants it!!

On the IE tour, Bono introduced this song by talking about when he first met Ali Stewart, who is now Ali Hewson, his wife. He met her in his teens and was blown away by her. He then set to write the perfect song for her. He recalls her saying that she didn't need perfection, and told the audience "that's when I knew I had a chance." I just think this is such a sweet story.

To me... this song is about drug addiction.
@samanthata please explain. I'd like to know what you mean because no one has written much of an explanation for it

@samanthata I think a lot of songs about love can also be about drugs or addiction in general. They are very related in what they do to us. He could be talking to someone who is not in addiction and describing what is't like for him, or even talking to the drug itself.

As is almost always true, Bono's lyrics have many layers of meaning. Very often, his lyrics have a layer of Christian meaning. (I think of them almost as a Christian band).
I think the three verses of this song are all being sung to Jesus. Jesus is the "you" in the verses. This is very obvious in the third verse where he says "And I’m a long way From your hill of Calvary".
First verse - Jesus knows what's in our inner being but is not repulsed. Second verse - Jesus will reveal himself to you, and you give everything to him. Third verse - I'm a long way from perfect, but Jesus will always be the light.
The refrains are spoken to Bono and us - a motivation to not lose sight of the light. We are all the Someone...
@LibertyMark Well said Mark. Having lived in Ireland, I can tell you the Irish domestic audience is very Catholic, but U2 probably realized early on that their international audience is far more secular. So they they tend to obscure their religious themes as not to provoke the non religious, or even anti-Christian /SJW types. If they had come along twenty years later, they probably would have been terrified to include ANY of that stuff, as the SJWs have become so outspoken and have dominated much of the internet (and might bash U2 for carrying water for Christianity.) The irony, of course, is that U2 is a very liberal, activist band, pushing for many of the same goals as the SJWs (just listen to "This Is Where You Can Reach Me Now")-- but when you contradict their political orthodoxy, those types can be very unforgiving and don't often "turn the other cheek."

Powerful song.
@ProvidenceXz why is it so powerful? What does it mean to you that is so powerful?

This song is about Bono's mom who died when he was 14. Bono talks about it in U2 experience concert in Paris.
@juangcastro I believe you're thinking about "Iris (Hold Me Close)," which Bono wrote about his mother. On the IE tour, he actually said "Song for Someone" was written about his now-wife Ali when he first met her.
