The Negative One Lyrics
Fire and caffeine, a lot of nicotine
I'm gonna burn, so I better tell you everything
The competition, the superstition
Nevermind 'cause you're never gonna give in
It's a crisis, just how you like it
The same drama in a different disguise
I'm bound to walk with a target on my back
At least I'm ready for another attack
The Lord of lies
The morning star
You had to be set free
Opposing sides
Your choices are
The negative one and me
Svengali, why are we the enemies?
I never follow and I never make apologies
Your dementias are gonna getcha
Because your walls can't support each other
Settle for the cynical, you're so political
You're getting ready 'cause the first move is critical
Reciprocity, somebody's listening
What did we learn from our time in captivity?
The Lord of lies
The morning star
You had to be set free
Opposing sides
Your choices are
The negative one and me
The negative one and me
I hope you live
To see the day
When your world goes up in flames
And as you die
You see my face
You're the only one to blame, yeah
Fuck
The Prescient, the Nascent
The quotient (They all will fall)
The Cystic, symbolic, condition (Systemic)
Egregious, replete with
These lesions (Contaminate)
Succumb to the selfish
Creation (Your failure)
No accountability, divisibility
I point a finger but it's always looking back at me
The centipede's pulling on the mechanism
Unearthing scars of the cataclysm
When the innocent begin to circumvent
The color fades, but the picture is vibrant
What do you believe? Does it matter now?
Turn away, the killer is disavowed
The Lord of lies
The morning star
You had to be set free
Opposing sides
Your choices are
The negative one and me
I hope you live

The Heretic Anthem v2.0, basically.
"The Lord of lies The morning star" If you ask me, that refers to Lucifer! And no I dont think they are satanists or anything like that, but I kinda get a feeling its about him.
This song is about the departure of the best metal drummer to ever kick a double bass.. "The morning star" is an expression often used to describe Jesus which was joeys mask.. And if your a true knot fan you will pick up on the other subtle things mentioned in the song.. I could rant and explain each one but where is the fun in that? Songs are interpreted however you want them to be.. That's what's so freeing about music..
@One:8830Fuq I'm glad someone else sees that this is totally about Joey.

@One:12270Fuq This song isn't about Joey, nor is any of the songs from the gray chapter. Corey has said that it is NOT about Joey, so i just want everyone to stop kissing Joey's ass because he used to be an awesome drummer. But the fact is, in the last few years he was in Slipknot he was acting like a complete dick! Putting triggers on an acoustic drum kit to somehow make up for the lack of talent he had all through 2008-2013 is not what I'd call "one of the best drummers ever".

@One:27993Fuq actually... the morning star is what they use to refer to Lucifer. In fact Lucifer literally means "Morning Star" "The Lord of lies" could be a reference to Belial (As referenced in Diablo 3 as the lord of lies) which in the Jewish faith is also the Devil. So no, unless Slipknot are literally calling Joey "the devil" this song is not about him.

No. This song IS NOT about Joey. COME ON. He may have been a good drummer but how good was he if they had a falling out and his leaving was mutual. Anyway, enough about that 5y.o drama. It's done and dusted. The Gray Chapter was a sick album. This has to be about Lucifer... The devil. I'm not saying the band is Satanic but as far as the Christians go ol' Luci gets a bad rap and I think that is what this song is about. God creates the big bad to punish the evil doers but he becomes this excuse for everything bad that a person does. Any time Catholic Church comes under fire for the massive amounts of child sexual abuse they say that the devil is making the people investigating it do it. Or the devil made the priests do it. Plenty of other examples. But the devil has become the perfect scapegoat (no pun intended) That's what the songs jumps out at me about. Basically that and "you're either a good christian or you are evil".
