So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
I fear mirrors and lights
It's been a long day
I'm scared of looking behind
'Cause we've come such a long way
Holding on to a dream
And you're gonna make it
Know if you hold on to tight
That you'll probably break it
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you broke lose
You don't rain that you pour
Down on my heart, babe
I'm sure that I've said it before
But you made it unlock, babe
When I say what I say
Know you're forgiven
'Cause, honey, you don't have a clue
What you do, you're just living
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
Oh, you don't know your own strength
You'll leave in the end
Like you always do
Like you always do
'Cause, you, you don't know your own strength
Don't really want strength
So I'm leaving you blue
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
It's been a long day
I'm scared of looking behind
'Cause we've come such a long way
Holding on to a dream
And you're gonna make it
Know if you hold on to tight
That you'll probably break it
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you broke lose
You don't rain that you pour
Down on my heart, babe
I'm sure that I've said it before
But you made it unlock, babe
When I say what I say
Know you're forgiven
'Cause, honey, you don't have a clue
What you do, you're just living
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
Oh, you don't know your own strength
You'll leave in the end
Like you always do
Like you always do
'Cause, you, you don't know your own strength
Don't really want strength
So I'm leaving you blue
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!
I'm not your anchor anymore!
You can go sail another shore
Now you've broke lose
I'm not your anchor anymore!

This is a very simple yet powerful song. It reflects someone who realizes their relationship is slipping and the inevitable will happen. Of course this is the break-up of a relationship. The realization is no one wants to be used and being an anchor and treated as something to fall back on really does not work. Does love conquer all or is it time to move on? His lover about to leave holds the cards and not him.
