Cigarette Daydreams Lyrics

Did you stand there all alone
Oh I cannot explain what's going down
I can see you standing next to me
In and out somewhere else right now

You sigh look away
I can see it clear as day
Close your eyes so afraid
Hide behind that baby face

You can drive all night
Looking for answers in the pouring rain
You wanna find peace of mind
Looking for the answer

Funny how it seems like yesterday
As I recall you were looking out of place
Gathered up your things and slipped away
No time at all I followed you into the hall

Cigarette Daydream you were only seventeen
So sweet with a mean streak nearly brought
me to my knees

You can drive all night
Looking for the answers in the pouring rain
You wanna find peace of mind
Looking for the answer
If we could find a reason, a reason to change
Looking for the answer
If you find a reason a reason to say
Standing in the pouring rain

You can drive all night
Looking for the answers in the pouring rain
You wanna find peace of mind
Looking for the answer
If we could find a reason, a reason to change
Looking for the answer
If you find a reason a reason to say
Standing in the pouring rain

i feel like this song is about a relationship gone bad without a legitimate reason, and they are trying to figure out where it went wrong to try to fix it. "you sigh look away" and "soft speak with a mean streak nearly brought me to my knees" show the couple fighting. "you can drive all night looking for the answer in the pouring rain" shows the want for an answer to how the relationship could be mended. "if we could find a reason a reason to change" and "if you could find a reason a reason to stay" also shows how the singer wants their relationship to be alright again.

@edalobo your right but there is a reason, cage the elephant goes really deep with their songs and most of them have links to dark pasts. Watch the music video it explains alot

@edalobo The line "soft speak with a mean streak nearly brought me to my knees" isn't about a fight they had he's describing how she's so sweet 'soft speak' but has this ability to hurt him 'with a mean streak' and how this combination of things nearly made him marry her 'nearly brought me to my knees' is referring to getting down onto your knees and proposing.

My Opinion

@edalobo actually you are kind of correct - matt revealed that this song was written for his wife

Maybe this is a personal reach as I'm not a smoker, but I interpreted the phrase "cigarette daydreams" as recurring daydreams that take you away from your troubles and they can be addicting like cigarettes. I also think that it's about a situation that's fairly decent between two people that have had a thing for one another for a while. However, both of them are always yearning for something more.

I believe this song is about a girl that is vulnerable and isn't able to tell someone how they feel. Maybe the person is lost and cant find a way to make the person satisfied. "you can drive all night" meaning the answer is not there and may never be.

My 17-year old daughter is currently in rehab, and for me it speaks to the vulnerability and depression that often goes with girls that age. They are not yet adults, not yet sure of how to become the women they want to be or how to live with integrity and make the changes that need to be made and have few coping skills. But it's easy to see their massive potential....

My Interpretation

@valleycat you hit the nail on the head. every time this song comes on the radio it makes me sad for my son who had a suicide attempt late last year. don't know why it reminds me of his struggle so much - but decided to google the lyrics. still makes me sad but "glad" another person has the same basic interpretation I do.

I'm that kid, the one who hurt themselves. 17 going on 30 and smoking cigarettes without an ID. I promise at 21 I won't know myself, maybe not even 26. But I'm here and I'll make it through it it and I'll be better than you imagined. I just needed you to tuck in my shirt and see my potential and snap me back into my senses.

It seems to be referring to a relationship that at some point down the line started to fade away, or the couple started to drift apart. Some things can be held onto for a long time, and in some cases it is better to just let things go instead of searching your whole life and probably coming up with no solid answer. Finding "the reason" will satisfy his soul, but letting go all together will satisfy it just as much. Cigarette Daydream is most likely referring to have a smoke and thinking about all of this.

I felt like this song today. I had a good day. Really good day, I even got a beautiful girls number. But when I was walking home smoking my cigarette I felt empty inside , like I was missing something. I hate to admit it but I know it's because of an ex that I actually cared about.

@stoned_or_asleep I love your response. The best thing about any good song, is that It can mean something to us personally. (Individually) and I can't help but agree with what you said. For me... This girl I became very good friends with, pined away for me for two years. I always loved her, just not romantically. Then last year I finally gave it a chance. Well she broke up with me. I thought I was okay with that, because I never really felt that way about her. But here I am, still thinking about her. And I feel empty without...

Music is Art It can be interpreted differently - even from the original intent of the song writer. This reminds me of my son who struggles with mental health issues. Can't explain why without writing a book - but it did from the first time I heard it. What a beautiful song too - Cage the Elephant is a great band.

Four months (and four days) ago, my boyfriend of four years broke up with me unexpectedly, over text, with no concrete reason, and I never heard from him again. This song was added to his youtube playlist a few days before he texted me, and I didn't think anything of it at the time. I only came back to it today. After reading some of the translations on here, the breakup is making a little more sense to me. I had a huge meltdown that left me "unfit to drive" and "unfit to work" until a few weeks ago, which gave me a lot of time stuck in bed alone with my thoughts and our songs, drinking and smoking until I could sleep. We had clearly gotten too comfortable together, we'd become out of shape, unhappy (individually and together), and had lost all motivation. We had drifted apart, and I had interpreted it as coming closer. It was awful watching his life become so much better without me, while mine spun off the rails. This song reminds me of the long drives on the 401 from home to school. I miss the days when I could enjoy a song without reading into it, looking for how it could fit my problems. We never did get our "find a reason to change" as he silently slipped away from me, not telling me that he was losing interest. I'd do anything for a second chance.

Memory

@hannah1480 I've recently had a very similar experience with a close friend of mine. I guess this is why this song also spoke to me so much.

I believe that this song is about getting over a past. Based off the music video released, this also helped me come to this conclusion. In the video, there is signs of sexual abuse, and a girl going somewhat crazy. You can see her smiling and crying throughout different parts of the video. In the song,he basically narrates this happening. At the end of the video, she burns a car, with herself inside. Essentially saying that she had to "burn" away her past in order to heal. "You can drive all night looking for the answers in the pouring rain" is basically her fighting herself up until the moment where she burns the car. In all, this song I believe is about healing from a rough past.

My Interpretation

I saw this song and video as him talking about his younger sister. He shows love for her by dancing with her and twirling her around. I feel like he cares deeply about her and shows concern about her future. It seems like her wants her to know that she should leave the old her behind and become a better person and that she is loved and needed in this world despite her rage/pain. (I have a 17 year old sister who I care deeply about, so it could just be subjective) Or it could be about an old love who he just wants to let know that she is forgiven and has her whole life ahead of her.
