I love this song. I love the specific memories. They can't necessarily relate to everyone, but the sentiment is beautiful. It seems like a very personal song. For example "we counted every black car passing". |

Four months (and four days) ago, my boyfriend of four years broke up with me unexpectedly, over text, with no concrete reason, and I never heard from him again. This song was added to his youtube playlist a few days before he texted me, and I didn't think anything of it at the time. I only came back to it today. After reading some of the translations on here, the breakup is making a little more sense to me. I had a huge meltdown that left me "unfit to drive" and "unfit to work" until a few weeks ago, which gave me a lot of time stuck in bed alone with my thoughts and our songs, drinking and smoking until I could sleep. We had clearly gotten too comfortable together, we'd become out of shape, unhappy (individually and together), and had lost all motivation. We had drifted apart, and I had interpreted it as coming closer. It was awful watching his life become so much better without me, while mine spun off the rails. This song reminds me of the long drives on the 401 from home to school. I miss the days when I could enjoy a song without reading into it, looking for how it could fit my problems. We never did get our "find a reason to change" as he silently slipped away from me, not telling me that he was losing interest. I'd do anything for a second chance. |

I don't think anyone is doing anyone wrong in this song. It is about a relationship that has turned sour overtime. The narrator knows it's not a healthy relationship, and knows that by ending things he is doing the right thing, but it still hurts him to walk away from something that was once so important. He may not be literally turning the car around... it seems to me like a figurative form for wanting to go back to her even though he is strong enough not to. He is always thinking of her, without being with her. |
