In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

“What were you digging, what did you bury before those hands pulled me from the earth.” She buried her past, maybe a lover she had before she dug for him (hozier) and pulled him out/ took him in or saved him from dying. Seems like she had to leave one man for another and saved him instead of the other guy. He’s telling her that he knows her type, “I knew that look dear, it was in someone who dug long ago” -someone else dug for him and tried saving him before long ago.
“I will not ask you why you were creeping, in some sad way I already know.” -it seems like the girl is feeling guilty for leaving the other man for him because now he (Hozier) can possibly think that she can do the same thing to him. So Hozier is saying that he already knows why she was creeping, it was because she was with someone she didn’t care for, something Hozier understood and is trying to convince her that he really understands, it’s all right.
In the end, it’s about a girl that left someone else for him, and he’s singing to her telling her that he understands why, it’s okay, I don’t care about your past or where you came from, just put your lips on my lips and let’s kiss like real people do. Something she apparently didn’t have…
