Adaptation Lyrics

When the sun goes up you're searching for a love
so your heart won't lead you to anyone
When the sun goes down I know what you become
You become awake unlike the rest of us

I lay my head on a thousand beds
It's been a test to see how far a man can go
without himself
I think I lost the only piece
that held it all in place
Now my madness is the only love
I let myself embrace

I could have stayed
but I chose the life
I chose the life
then I realized
she might have been the one
I let it go
for a little fun

I made a trade;
gave away our days
for a little fame
now I never see your face,
but it's okay
I adapted anyway

Adapted to these models
who's adapted to the bottle
They take it down like water
just to burn away their sorrows
I stay up 'til tomorrow
just to tear down all their morals
And all is fair in love and war;
she's pure

So pure
Let the love that's so uncut..and clean
So clean
as opposed to what I offered cuz I chose the life
I chose the life
then I realized
she might have been the one
I let it go
for a little fun

I've made a trade;
gave away our days
for a little fame
now I never see your face
but it's okay
I adapted anyway

She might just be the one
She might just be the one
She might just be the one
She might just be the one

Personally I see this as a follow up from wicked games and the fact that the albums are 2 years apart further this thought. In wicked games he talks about leaving his "girl back home, I (Abel) don't love her no more" before being with another woman, while within this song he talks about how he "chose a lie, I chose the life" which could be seen as the choice previously made in wicked games two years ago.

He then goes on to talk about how she could have been the one, which could be seen as the choice he made leaving her in "wicked games". And after this time he has been with many women - "i lay my head on a thousand beds, it's been a test to see how far a man can go without himself" - 1000 beds being all the nights he's spent with different women. Although he has been with these many women there has been no emotional attachment there and the sex is JUST sex, implied by the fact that he refers to his sexual encounters as a "test" in which to see how many times he can do this "without himself" meaning without allowing himself to fall in love.

Another important quote associated with the thought of not allowing himself to fall in love would be "now my madness is the only love I let myself embrace".

He then goes on to talk about he is "adapted" to never seeing this woman he loves, although he thinks that she is "the one". Which I think is heartbreaking honestly, that he's just got used to not being able to have her there.

This song is beautiful and is just so deep. This is just my interpretation but I really think it gives a deeper depth to the story. You can just hear the emotional pain within the lyrics, a deep regret.

Pretty straightforward, lyrics-wise. It is interesting, though, how much bigger the vein of regret flows through, not only this song, but most of the album. While it's always a prevalent theme in The Weeknd's music, it's laid all the more plain on Kiss Land.

So are all his songs about drugs?? he's clearly talking about white girl- "she might have been the one"??? Anybody know what he's talking about?

This song is about Abel ( The Weeknd) realizing the cost of losing the person you love all for the price of fame and now having to adapted to living alone. To me this song is deep, he realize his fault and now takes the blame and starts to reflect on everything.
