Wrecking Ball Lyrics
We clawed, we chained, our hearts in vain
We jumped, never asking why
We kissed, I fell under your spell
A love no one could deny
Don't you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can't live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you
I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you wreck me
I put you high up in the sky
And now, you're not coming down
It slowly turned, you let me burn
And now, we're ashes on the ground
Don't you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I can't live a lie, running for my life
I will always want you
I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was wreck me
I came in like a wrecking ball
Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung
Left me crouching in a blazing fall
All you ever did was wreck me
Yeah, you wreck me
I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
And instead of using force
I guess I should've let you win
I never meant to start a war
I just wanted you to let me in
I guess I should've let you win
Don't you ever say I just walked away
I will always want you
I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls

This song is very straight foward and paints a very visual picture. She is saying this love was the first time she just jumped right in, without a second thought, and it wrecked her. It wrecked both of them.
I don't think she is talking about a love for another human, but rather music/singing in general.

To me it sounds like she fell hard for someone but the relationship was emotionally unstable and unequal. She was definitely putting more into it than he was yet she had so many expectations toward him. "I put you high up in the sky" and we all know not to expect too much from guys, because one, not to offend any guys that may be around, but it does usually take them longer to get emotionally attached than it does for a girl. You can't rush them or you'll only be left disappointed. And when she said "All I wanted was to break your walls" or the line "I just wanted you to let me in" She desperately wanted him to feel the same way she did for him. She wanted him to open up to her emotionally but she went about it the wrong way. I think the wrecking ball is a metaphor for rushing things, or forcing feelings that may never even grow in the first place. Feelings need to be allowed time to develop and by her "using force" or coming on too strong, it only led to destruction in the end.
It's quite similar to my own relationship. We're emotionally unequal at the moment and I'm trying my best to be patient with him rather than trying to rush or scare him off. Ladies, let her song be a lesson or a warning to you for your men. They need to be given time so that you may grow not only together but as individuals. It's agonizing, yes, when you feel strongly for someone and you want them to feel the same way but it takes time and if those feelings don't develop than perhaps it's time to move on. However, the mistake that Miley made is she tried to force it on him or rush him. And no one wants to be in love all by themselves, believe me it's the worst feeling ever.
I could be totally wrong but this is my personal interpretation. And everyone has their own opinions but this one holds true for me:)
You aren't totally wrong, that is EXACTLY what I was thinking when I heard this song :)

That is true. U kno when u mentioned something like"ladies this song is a warning for your men" well its true yeah but ull also agree with me that this song serves as a warning for men too. I av been in a situation where i didnt just walked away from my girl becoz i wanted to date other women. I put her up in the sky and ill always make the difference when it comes to her n other girls. I tried so hard to break into her walls. It was like her walls were unbreakable. U see sometimes...

I know how it feels when you love some1 very much n they dont love u the same way. As u can see from the lyrics, "ill always want you" when you truely love someone no matter what, whether u leave them or they walk away from you. When they come back youll never reject them. Because when you think of the things u wanna do n life u wanna live with them, ull only see that moment as a chance for u to fulfill those wishes. Life as we kno it is a fawked up world. You will love someone with all ur heart. In the end theyll leave you n that feeling only u cant tell. Thats y Miley said, "i came in like a wreckling ball, i never hit so hard in love, all i wanted was to break your walls, all you ever did was to break me, yeah u wreck me! (This song is so touching to me, i feel it right in my hear) From the lines i quoted, Miley never said she went hard in love, i think she took her time like any cinderella will do!
I completely agree with this interpretation. I experienced a similar situation myself and hence despite not particularly liking Miley Cyrus nor her music, this song particularly struck me, as if I could connect with the lyrics and it helped me feel less 'alone' with regards to this experience.

Though I don't think I 'came in like a wrecking ball' in the sense that he chased me for quite some time before I gave in, got to know him on a personal level (not just physical attraction) and fell in love with him; I completely understand the 'all I ever wanted was to break your walls' (he had quite a few emotional issues which I felt not only prevented him from truly connecting with his own emotions, but also from connecting with someone else's emotions on a higher level (deeply in love) on top of unfortunate timing etc.). I kept devoting my entire self to him, all my love. At times I could not actually believe how much I loved this man; everything about him. I thought it was what he would eventually appreciate. Yet I think I pushed him too far when it became clear that there was something not right, 'unequal emotions' as you've stated. I felt like I was in the dark and that this was my only way out; trying to confront him, without response on his behalf; just passive excuses all the time. I just wanted to know where I stood but instead he chose to cower and run.
It also gave me an insight into how people truly are not always what they seem... I will never again judge some womanising matcho who may be hiding an overly sensitive heart of gold after discovering that the 'shy and caring' man I thought I knew, was not even capable of having an adult conversation to end things more delicately. Not to mention that I had suggested we end it a few times (against my will; hoping we find solutions) but he kept telling me he did not think it need come to that. He probably lied but I just wish he told me the truth.
I am not denying that a relationship is easy to end (I am truly the last person to even consider stating this) but after a couple years one would only hope that even if the relationship must end, that the mutual respect that existed throughout still remain until the end.
Strangely enough I then met a man who fell for me from the first time he met me. We have been together for over a year now but it took me a very long time to believe and trust him (and feel) after my last experience.
Regardless of my interpretation I think the lyrics here are surprisingly pretty deep and that this song will benefit both those who appreciate it for their own reasons and those who are trying to heal their past wounds. Music is a remedy!
It sounds like an individual falling fast or someone, maybe the result of a one night stand. For whatever reason the two aren't on the same page and she's ready to commit but they aren't and then she's hurt. Possibly later on the other person is ready and now shes not which creates some animosity.Surprisingly a pretty good deep song.
@law187 I gotta admit even though it's weird it's true he was messing around with her when she was 16 and he was 19 years old off set of the last song.

I believe Miley is trying to express her frustration about not being able to get through to her lover even after she "Came in like a wrecking ball". She so desperately wants to knock down is walls (emotional walls).
@PoetViolet Miley was not trying to express anything. She did not write the song. MoZella and Stephen Moccio, and they've both made it clear it was about a relationship MoZella had ended just before they started writing the song. They didn't even know at first that they would offer it to Miley.

Okay, I do not think this is about Liam and her break up at all, their relationship was not this intense. I think they both knew that their relationship wasn't meant to be taken too far, it was purely for publicity. I think this is about her and the music industry. She is saying how she wanted the music industry to let her in, so she came in like a "wrecking ball" and used force (Twerk incident, drastic hair change, style change, juicy j) to try and make them let her in, since she started off as Hannah Montana her image was 'innocent', once she decided she wanted in the music industry her image was in the way, so she used force to change the worlds opinion on her, which worked, but in a bad way. She is being forced to do all of this stuff to change an unwanted image. She is saying that the music industry is wrecking her. She is doing what she loves, singing, and it hits her hard... it wrecks her image. So, my view on this song is that she is saying the music industry is wrecking her, and her way to try and force them to accept her is by "using force" and "coming in like a wrecking ball". basically to sum it up, Music industry rejects her, she comes back and wrecks them and "breaks their walls" aka the barrier of acceptance, and the music industry just comes right back and wrecks her again. XD yeah
That's a really good interpretation! I think the song could be looked at in a variety of different ways and this one definitely sounds accurate. But of course, who knows in less we were to ask her ourselves right?:P

@PercyLou I would like to believe your interpretation, but I don't think she's that intelligent. If she was the "force for reason and honesty" she has tried to portray herself as, in the wake of the incomprehensible/nonsenscial "controversy" surrounding the video, she would not sing songs like this. Why not? Because they tacitly support discredited/oppressive/unreal concepts of "normal"/"abnormal" behavour within "relationships".

@PercyLou I agree with this. Everyone says it's about a relationship, I think that's obvious. But I think it means much more than that. And I think Mile is much smarter than she lets on, as it certainly suits the image she tries to portray.

This song was easily one of the better of the 'trashy pop" songs that comes out of the US.

I definitely think this was written with at least some thought of the music industry and media.

So here we are, Sacha and I holding this girl together who was just very emotional, trying to comfort her. "

This song is obviously about a relationship, most likely one coming to an end. It starts with two people meeting and falling head over heels with each other without hesitation. Eventually problems developed and fights began and by the second verse it sounds like she knows the relationship should end but loves him so much, that she's holding on with everything she has; "I put you high up in the sky and now you're not coming down". The next line "It slowly turned, you let me burn and now we're ashes on the ground" shows that maybe he wasn't putting in as much effort into fixing things. She wanted to make the relationship work despite the doubts and he kind of just let things fall apart. "Don't you ever say I just walked away", is her telling him 'I really tried. Don't act like I gave up so easy because I really loved you, but I can't anymore'. The chorus really gets to the chore of their problems, as well as the bridge. All she wanted was for him to open up and let down his walls with her but he always kept his guard up. When she finally let him in all he did was put her down and "wreck her". But she's also realizing that maybe she wasn't as open with her feelings as she could've been, "I never meant to start a war/ I just wanted you to let me in/ And instead of using force/ I guess I should have let you in". Instead of always fighting with him about why he never showed emotion, she should have opened up about her feelings instead of starting an argument. In the end the song is about a couple who could never fully open up to each other and knock down their walls. I actually love this song and think Miley did really well with it.
Its not "obliviously about a relationship". In fact I don't think its about another human. I think it is her relationship with the music industry.

@PercyLou considering the song is actually written by the music industry and not Miley, I think your conclusion is a little off. Always good to see alternative interpretations, but the song definitely appears to be a romantic relationship.

We clawed, we chained, our hearts in vain We jumped, never asking why We kissed, I fell under your spell A love no one could deny (They hurt each other. When first time when they met, they fall in love,a love who everyone could se)
Don’t you ever say I just walked away I will always want you I can’t live a lie, running for my life I will always want you (the line "don't you ever say i just walked away",think she didn't want to listen him, because she will trust him.And she doesn't wanna do ruin her live because of lie).
I came in like a wrecking ball I never hit so hard in love All I wanted was to break your walls All you ever did was break me Yeah, you wreck me (She was never hurt when she falls in love with somebody)
I put you high up in the sky And now, you’re not coming down It slowly turned, you let me burn And now, we’re ashes on the ground (She was blind, and now she is hurt because of it.She is break. And now they break up)
I came in like a wrecking ball Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung Left me crouching in a blaze and fall All you ever did was break me Yeah, you wreck me (I think when she says"I came in like wrecking ball",she maybe think that when first time they met she was lost. When she found that he been lying to her,she was break. All he did is breaker her,and she was weak because of it).
This is not a hard song to interpret - it's just about the emotional difficulties of a relationship. Specifically, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth's relationship.
"We jumped, never asking why We kissed, I fell under your spell" - These lines reference the beginning of the relationship, where everything seems wonderful and flawless and perfect the instant you first kiss. She's blind to everything else. However, harder times are coming...
"Don’t you ever say I just walked away I will always want you" - She believes she put in effort to salvage the relationship and did not want to lose it, and that she still "wants" her partner.
"I came in like a wrecking ball I never hit so hard in love" - She thinks she was a big event in her partner's love life and got him emotionally invested.
"All I wanted was to break your walls All you ever did was break me Yeah, you wreck me" - She wanted to break down his emotional barriers but failed to, and feels that he hurt her for trying.
"I put you high up in the sky And now, you’re not coming down It slowly turned, you let me burn And now, we’re ashes on the ground" - She adored and looked up to him and has not ceased to even now that it's over. But as their relationship went downhill he made no effort to stop it and let her get hurt. Because of this neither one of them is happy and their happiness has been reduced to ashes.
"Yeah, I just closed my eyes and swung Left me crouching in a blaze and fall" - This is not proper English which makes it difficult to decipher. Go back to school, MIley.
"I never meant to start a war I just wanted you to let me in And instead of using force I guess I should’ve let you in" - By trying to break down his barriers and get him to show vulnerability she caused larger problems than she anticipated and grew frustrated by this. She tried to use force but never actually opened herself up in return, which she realizes she should have.
Pretty dull actually. Sounds like every failed relationship to me.
I love this song, and the fact that its saying that falling in love isn't easy
She fell hard and was completely infatuated and smitten with her mate, but the relationship was not equal emotionally, she says I can't live a lie running for my life, all you ever did was wreck me, more than likely the relationship was always up/down, make/up break/up, lies, promises, innuendos and constant chaos and heartbreak trying to justify these feelings they had with each other but she was in it stronger than him and he probably took advantage and toyed with her heart at times, I suspect he did what so many ppl do when someone falls hard for them, they pretend to be all in just enough to keep you but are still being single otherwise, her new identity is her acting out due to the pain from the relationship and break up.
