Pretendin' beauty, like it don't exist
A couple feudin', truthful kiss
You wake up Spanish, sayin' all their names
You fake an accent to cover the shame
And the absolutism of those who sleep
And the who is who ism is the bit you keep

And I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me, no
Honey, no
I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me, no

I see a beach when we both were young
The undulations, the summer sun
And you would watch me, I won't forget
I never looked up when your hair got wet
The place is empty now, it's been written off
It's funny your love's got me feelin' tough

And I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me, no
Oh honey, no
I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me, no
Oh honey, no
Honey oh, oh, oh

Satisfaction of bein' right
Will cast a feelin' on this moonlit night
I know I said stuff, it keeps me awake
You never offered your heart to break
There's no sacrifice in the ranks you rate
Every breath we take gives us away

And I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me, no
honey, no
I don't belong to you
You don't belong to me, no
Oh honey, no

Honey, oh
Honey, oh
Honey
Honey, oh
Honey, oh

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
