You Were Good Lyrics

It could have been but never was
At least the way you thought it'd be when you grew up
And there's so much of you I love
But loving you alone isn't enough

You were good
You were good
Then you were gone
I believed you all along
Yeah it's sad but baby here we are
It was good
It was good
Then it was gone

You got a charm you wear around your neck
Reminds you of him and I can see right through
Either you're just bad at cheating
Or there's something in your heart you wished I knew

You were good
You were good
Then you were gone
I believed you all along
Yeah it's sad but baby here we are
It was good
It was good
Then it was gone

So I'm not who you wanted but
You're still the one who sets a fire in me
Guess I'll drink what I'll drink
Until the loving touch I need is not a need

You were good
You were good
Then you were gone
I believed you all along
Yeah it's sad but baby here we are
It was good
It was good
Then it was gone

It was good
It was good
Then it was gone

It was good
It was good
Then it was gone

This song reminds me of a high school/college relationship growing up. In high school and college, they were happy and thought that they'd be together forever. But then something came along that made them take a hiatus (a mutual breakup for college, for example, or something happened in one of their lives).

Through the years, the guy finds out that she's moved on, or else they give it another go, but he finds out that her heart is still wth someone else. His heart, meanwhile, is still with her, and he can't shake that. Now, she's left with someone else, and he's stuck spinning his wheels with what could have been.

That first part is already making me feel bad. In the past I've had a huge crush on a girl, I enjoyed every moment with her but she never saw me as a boyfriend... Anyway, another amazing song from JEW. This whole album is blowing my mind. When i heard the first song I Will Steal You Back.. damn I felt in love with this record immediately.

Great song I think moose2438's interpretation is pretty much what comes to my mind as well

I just wanted to add that the lines "And there's so much of you I love / But loving you alone isn't enough" reminded me of another beautiful song, "My Very Best" by Elbow. That song has the lines "If it seems that it's just not enough to love / Then love lie down", which seems to me to express a similar idea: just one person loving the other isn't enough, and if that one-way love is the best it's gonna be then it'd be better to just let it go and move on with respect. The story of "My Very Best" is also reminiscent of this song's story (or at least the one moose2438 suggests), with the affection remaining very strong on one side but gradually fading on the other, while both people still respect each other. It's also suggested that the fading affection on one side is due at least partly to the relationship being long-distance for a time, with the line "Long away and far apart / That's how forest fires start".

Sorry for going on about the wrong song; I just found the coincidental similarity between these two great song interesting :)

The lines "Either you're just bad at cheating or there's something in your heart you wish I knew" hit me hard. Great song
