The Littlest Things Lyrics
The first time that that it came to me
I was a young boy, little did I not believe
I had a hole in my heart and I was looking for a piece that fit
The next time I was privy to the dirty secrets
Of the little hidden clues
And when I added it up I knew a little but a little won't do
Can anybody out there tell me something true?
Preferably something I know one can't dispute
When everybody's spilling lifelong secrets
I'm betting safely on the man who will keep his
Despite his weakness
He'll take his secrets to the grave
(And we will leave it all... behind)
Don't ever leave the one you love behind
(So get your fill while you're... alive)
Don't you ever let them take you alive
And I don't know where the lies end and the truth begins
Don't listen to anyone telling you anything is a truth it's all relative
Though I know it'll never ever come to this, I have a secret
And that secret is there was a lie that I told myself til' it became the truth
And rest assured I have a plan B in my mind
If all the webs that weave should ever come and unwind
But I got plenty of time
Can anybody out there tell me something true?
Preferably something that no one can dispute
When everybody's spilling lifelong secrets
I'm betting safely on the man who will keep his
Despite his weakness
He'll take his secrets to the grave
(And we will leave it all... behind)
Don't ever leave the one you love behind
(So get your fill while you're... alive)
Don't you ever let them take you alive
And I don't know where the lies end and the truth begins
Don't listen to anyone telling you anything is the truth it's all relative
I still believe
In mysteries
And all that lies
In reveries
And though they'll lay my body in the ground
I plan to never settle down
(acoustic)
I took the medicine
But the pills won't work
The pills they don't do anything
But rearrange all the littlest things
And I might know a little bit
But that bit won't do
The bit I know is irrelevant
So I guess this song is irrelevant too
Oh-oh

I feel like this song is a reaction to this era of limitless information and the resulting loss and death of truth because of it. I say this because truths, or more accurately what we perceive to be truth, is endlessly picked apart and construed through bias and opinion and as a result, truth becomes subjective to the individual, thus making truth irrelevant. We, as rational individuals, have a duty to seek out the real truth and sift through all of the unnecessary pollution. Perhaps I'm looking at this much too deeply, but whatever.
I think that's part of it. Feels a lot like the song is simply written from the point of view of a bit of a desperate nihilist. Religious fanatics are screaming about heaven and hell, scientists are screaming about atheism, politicians are screaming about scandals and solutions and all that the singer knows is the famous Socratean detail that he knows nothing. He knows there's a huge amount of lies and bullshit on each side which is why he is literally asking if anybody out there at all can tell him "something true, preferably something that no one can dispute"....
