This just about sums it up. The singer is in love and their loved one isn't. The singer wants attention from the other person, but they're too self involved to care or just don't want to get attached.

I think this song is about a weird kind of unrequited love. One person loves another and the one they love has feelings for them back, but refuse to act on them.
Ex: " As we are floating in the blue I am softly watching you Oh boy your eyes betray what burns inside you"
The one they love stay focused on themselves and try to act like they don't notice the other person's feelings while the one who loves them is longing to be noticed back by that person.
Ex: "Whatever I feel for you You only seem to care about you Is there any chance you could see me too? 'Cause I love you Is there anything I could do Just to get some attention from you"
Or the person they love had felt something for them in the beginning, but got swept away by "the waves" (popular crowd maybe) and started to lose feelings for the person that loves them.
Ex: Goes from "Oh boy your eyes betray what burns inside of you" to "As we were dancing in the blue, I was synchronized with you, but now the sound of love is out of tune".
The lines, "In the waves I've lost every trace of you Where are you?" seem to show how the one they love has maybe changed from the person they fell in love with because their running with a new crowd (the waves) and how they don't recognize them anymore. Or it could just be another example of how self-absorbed the person they love is.
ya but if you watch the music video you dont see a girl or woman of any sort. but you do see a church and people in the church crying and an old man with a cross in his hands. you should check out the video and and look at everything really closely cuz you figure out a lot of stuff like that. but i think its more about people getting really confused cuz they cant find god, or they have been raised in knowing god but now that they stop and think about it they just cant recognize him....

I like the last thought, that "he" is trying to get god or God to notice him, but it hit me that maybe it's God telling the man how much he loves him, but the man, or "we" or "mankind" is too self absorbed to recognize it?
@sunsetdiane WOW that was an awesome interpretation. I felt it was man singing to God but it makes way more sense that the singer is posing as God singing back to man.

I'd always thought that it was to do with a relationship as you said, but when i saw the video I assumed it was about losing religion and trying to get proof of a god, and finding god's love etc. But now that you mention it, I do also like the idea that it might be from god's perspective to human kind. Interesting. The video does still confuse me too a little, the bit near the end with the whales and the priest(?)'s hands turning to rock.

When I listen to this song, I think more along the lines of friendship. I don't want to sound cliche, (I love this song), but I more envision seeing someone lose their friend to depression.

If you pay attention to what the Russian guy says in the beggining (of the video): "Today I will tell you a story about a man who drowned in the cold waters of the ocean - after the loss of the one he loved. This story is about a man who died twice." You don't fo this far for friendships... this is a matter of the heart! My opinion! :)

Perhaps it's about someone neglecting their inner self and who they really are or want to be? Think of it as 2 sides of the same person with the song being sung by that inside person.

and then at "to get some attention from you" in the music video it points to a guy in church who's holding a cross in his hands. cuz i guess he's trying to get gods attention. i honestly dont know.
