I'd always thought that it was to do with a relationship as you said, but when i saw the video I assumed it was about losing religion and trying to get proof of a god, and finding god's love etc.
But now that you mention it, I do also like the idea that it might be from god's perspective to human kind. Interesting. The video does still confuse me too a little, the bit near the end with the whales and the priest(?)'s hands turning to rock.
