Bel Air Lyrics

Gargoyles, standing, at the front of your gate
Trying to tell me to wait
But I can’t wait to see you
So I run, like I'm mad, to heaven's door
I don't wanna be bad
I won't cheat you no more

Roses, Bel Air, take me there
I've been waiting to meet you
Palm trees, in the light, I can see, late at night
Darling I'm waiting to greet you
Come to me baby

Spotlight, bad baby, you've got a flare
For the violentest kind of love anywhere out there
Mon amour, sweet child of mine
You're divine
Didn't anyone ever tell you
It's okay to shine?

Roses, Bel Air, take me there
I've been waiting to meet you
Palm trees in the light
I can see, late at night
Darling I'm waiting to greet you
Come to me baby

Don't be afraid of me
Don't be ashamed
Walk in the way of my soft resurrection
Idol of roses, iconic soul
I know your name
Lead me to war with your brilliant direction

Roses Bel Air, take me there
I've been waiting to meet you
Palm trees in the light
I can see, late at night
Darling I'm waiting to greet you
Come to me baby

Roses Bel Air, take me there
I've been waiting to meet you
Grenadine sunshine, can you break this heart of mine?
Darling I'm waiting to greet you
Come to me baby

Rife with subtle allusions to the band, Guns N' Roses, the song appears to be about Del Rey's brief romance with Axl Rose.

"Bel-Air" in the title and repeated throughout the refrain has a dual meaning. First, it is a location in Los Angeles, a city in which Axl Rose lives. Additionally, he is known for driving a restored Chevy Bel-Air automobile. So, when she says "Roses, Bel Air, take me there." She's talking both about going to Bel Air to meet her lover with flowers, and also about Axl Rose sporting her around in his sports car.

In the second verse, the lyric "sweet child of mine" directly alludes to the hit single by Guns N' Roses of the same name. Further, in the third verse, Del Rey sings "Idol of roses, iconic soul. I know your name" again refers to Axl Rose, indirectly describing him as a music icon known for "Roses" (or Guns N' Roses, as it were). Over all, the song has a mourning atmosphere; the romance between Rose and Del Rey was very secretive, and it appears that the "wall built by brilliant direction" implies that he wanted to keep the relationship out of the spotlight, she did not, and it eventually led to their break up.

My Interpretation

I forgot to add that the first verse mentions "Heave's Door". Guns N' Roses notably covered "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" back in the early nineties.

My personal interpretation of Bel Air is the following.

"Gargoyles standing at the front of your gate. Trying to tell me to wait, But I can't wait to see you." she is referring to Satan's kingdom, he does not acknowledge her presence when she is begging to see him so in order to make him mad. she does the following,

"So I run like I'm mad to heaven's door. I don't wanna be bad, I wont cheat you no more" She is talking to God and betraying Satan and asking God to accept her in his kingdom. By doing this she is trying to make Satan mad.

Roses are common in funerals, which represents her or death in general. Bel Air, a place that where a lot of wealthy people live. Money is the root of all evil, therefore, Bel Air could represent hell. Palm trees is a symbol of victory and eternal life. This could represent what Satan offered her in exchange of her soul victory and eternal life.

"I can sleep late at night" she could be referring to how she could not sleep before, because she was fighting with demons but now she that she has given up her soul she CAN sleep at night because she is on Satan's side.

"Don't be afraid of me, don't be ashamed. Walk in the way of my soft resurrection." she's speaking to Satan "Idol of roses", Idol of death "Iconic soul" Satan's soul is immortal and everyone wants to be immortal so she looks up to him or his soul as an icon. "lead me to war with your brilliant direction" war with God

towards the end of the lyrics she states "Grenadine sunshine, can you fade inside of mine." according to wiki, grenadine originated from the French word grenade which means pomegranate, with pomme meaning APPLE and granate derived from the Italian word for SEEDS. Having said that the apple represent knowledge and maybe even sin (as seen in adam and eve) and she's begging for him (Satan) to spread or plant his wisdom inside her.

My Interpretation

@xewww Gargoyles are typically built to ward off evil spirits ... so doubt that Satan would want gargoyles at his front gates.

Belair is another name for Satan. This song is about the worship and her love of Satan.

-Gargoyles at the front of his gate, check -She runs to heaven's door because she is mad at him, that's about the best way to get at 'im -Her bad baby has a flare for the violentest type of love, yup he sure does -He comes to her at night. Night since ancient times has been when the stirrings of evil occur. -Speaking directly to Belair, asking him to take her there -Finds her lover to be "divine" -Something about resurrection -I know your name, lead me to war? Ooook...

Or maybe it's just about Axl Rose, lol.

My Interpretation

what the hell is wrong with you?!

It's that spiritually and in the flesh about Axl Rose. So it's both. As above, so below. The lyrics are representing the ones going to war and willing to die for the false light of everlasting flesh life, which is the short-lived lie. Instead of willing to die for the real and true light of the spirit through Christ. Many are under the spell and do not realize it yet. People either see it or they are "blinded by the light"- the false light, the sun. Playing in the sun cause that's where the fun is, etc...

@PsychicDog Belair is NOT another name for Satan, and gargoyles were erected to ward off evil spirits (so Satan would not have gargoyles at Hell's Gate).

My brother thinks that this song is Death talking to someone when they die and some lyrics are death talking and some lyrics are the person dying talking to Death. It's a pretty cool way to look at it. In the chorus at this part: "Roses, Bel Air, take me there, I've been waiting to meet you." The person dying is talking to Death. Then Death says "Palm trees in the light, I can see late at night, darling I'm waiting to greet you, come to me baby."

I am wondering what these lyrics exactly refer to?!?! I am thinking it is mainly like going with the flow and starting something new, but not quite sure. Anyone care to help me out?

I strongly believe the song refers to Del Rey's brief romance with Guns N Roses front-man, Axl Rose, and the events that influenced its termination. See my post for a detail synopsis and clues that lead me to this interpretation.

I'm not great at interpreting song lyrics, and I had no idea about this guns n roses affair, but I always get the idea she's talking about death in this song. More in the sense that her lover has died and is in heaven and she is ready to be with him. I get this message mainly from the beginning: "Gargoyle's standing at the front of your gates, trying to tell me wait (until her time on earth is up" but I can't wait to see you. So I run like a child to heavens door. (ready for death) I don't...
