Lightning Bolt Lyrics

Morning
It’s another pure grey morning
Don’t know what the day is holding
And I get outside
And I walk right in to the path of a lightning bolt

Siren
Of an ambulance comes howling
Right through the centre of town and
No one blinks an eye
And I look up to the sky to the path of a lighting bolt

Met her
As the angels parted for her
But she only brought me torture
But that’s what happens
When it’s you that's standing in the path of a lightning bolt

Everyone I see just walks the walk with gritted teeth
But I just stand by and I wait my time
They say you gotta tow the line they want the water not the wine
But when I see the signs I'll jump on that lightning bolt

And chances
People tell you not to take chances
And they tell you that there aren’t any answers
I was starting to agree
But I woke suddenly in the path of a lightning bolt

Fortune
People talking all about fortune
Do you make it or does it just call you
In the blinking of an eye
Just another passerby in the path of a lightning bolt

Everyone I see just walks the walk with gritted teeth
But I just stand by and I wait my time
They say you gotta tow the line they want the water not the wine
But when I see the signs I'll jump on that lightning bolt

It was silence
I was lying back gazing skyward
When the moment got shattered
I remember what she said
And then she fled in the path of a lightning bolt

I like this song very much, I think the lightning bolt represents a sudden and unexpected situation in which he finds himself, a burst of fortunate events. In the chorus he says he is the kind of person who takes everything that has been put on the plate for him, he doesn't force it "I just stand by and I wait my time", but he will take the chance when it comes his way "when I see the signs I jump on that lightning bolt". He doesn't want to be one of those people who "walk with gritted teeth", "tow the line", the ones who don't take chances and believe there aren't any answers. I agree with his point of view - that luck is a great part of our lives, maybe even greater than we'd like to admit.

The lightning bolt could also represent his love at first sight: "Met her as the angels parted for her But she only brought me torture But that’s what happens When it’s you who’s standing in the path of a lightning bolt" So by taking chances the listener could assume he means "taking chances in love".

My Opinion

Couldn't the lightning bolt be the beautiful, energetic, vibant youth of today who offer what others cannot. We don't get to choose who interests us. It just happens. And they can never be who we need. They simply don't have it to offer. For instance, I wish I were young and beautiful and even naive, but I'm not. I just can't be what some people want; I'm not that 'lightning bolt," and my personality even scares away some people.

Yes, I guess I can agree with you, ILUVU, the lightning bolt could represent youth, meaning it's so energetic and also pretty short - "in the blinking of an eye". And the verse "I just stand by and wait my time" could also mean he's got all the time in the world, because he's so young.

@svellene To validate your idea that the lightning bolt itself could represent his love at first sight, that's the exact metaphor used in "The Godfather," when Michael Corleone is first struck by Apollonia. (That aside, I prefer ILUVU's & your alt. idea with lightning representing youth. However, I lean toward it as fleeting moments of opportunity in this context.)

I think it's just a song about taking chances when they come along and being optimistic hence the 'gritted teeth' line. The idea of living life, making mistake and not thinking too much, very inspiring

My Interpretation

I think the "lightning bolt" represents divine inspiration, and how he learnt to "jump" on that path and not just "stand" there. Supporting this divine notion, are the many "skyward" glances, as well as the mention of angels and water/wine. I believe the "her" is symbolic of this divine "lightning" and how action is required to not be tortured with what could have been. Fortune, love, good-times, they come like flashes of brilliance.

Its simply but good advice.

Take your chances/opportunities. It’s better to regret the things you’ve done rather than those that you didn’t

My Interpretation

The song is about taking risks and the lightning bolt represents that risk and the possibility that you are going to get hurt or simply fail.

"They say you gotta toe the line. They want the water not the wine But when I see the signs, I jump on that lightning bolt"

Gatorade very nearly ruined this song for me.
