I like this song very much, I think the lightning bolt represents a sudden and unexpected situation in which he finds himself, a burst of fortunate events. In the chorus he says he is the kind of person who takes everything that has been put on the plate for him, he doesn't force it "I just stand by and I wait my time", but he will take the chance when it comes his way "when I see the signs I jump on that lightning bolt". He doesn't want to be one of those people who "walk with gritted teeth", "tow the line", the ones who don't take chances and believe there aren't any answers. I agree with his point of view - that luck is a great part of our lives, maybe even greater than we'd like to admit.

The lightning bolt could also represent his love at first sight: "Met her as the angels parted for her But she only brought me torture But that’s what happens When it’s you who’s standing in the path of a lightning bolt" So by taking chances the listener could assume he means "taking chances in love".

My Opinion

Couldn't the lightning bolt be the beautiful, energetic, vibant youth of today who offer what others cannot. We don't get to choose who interests us. It just happens. And they can never be who we need. They simply don't have it to offer. For instance, I wish I were young and beautiful and even naive, but I'm not. I just can't be what some people want; I'm not that 'lightning bolt," and my personality even scares away some people.

Yes, I guess I can agree with you, ILUVU, the lightning bolt could represent youth, meaning it's so energetic and also pretty short - "in the blinking of an eye". And the verse "I just stand by and wait my time" could also mean he's got all the time in the world, because he's so young.

@svellene To validate your idea that the lightning bolt itself could represent his love at first sight, that's the exact metaphor used in "The Godfather," when Michael Corleone is first struck by Apollonia. (That aside, I prefer ILUVU's & your alt. idea with lightning representing youth. However, I lean toward it as fleeting moments of opportunity in this context.)
