Two Black Cadillacs Lyrics

Two black Cadillacs driving in a slow parade
Headlights shining bright in the middle of the day
One is for his wife,
The other for the woman who loved him at night
Two black Cadillacs meeting for the first time

[Chorus]
And the preacher said he was a good man
And his brother said he was a good friend
But the women in the two black veils didn’t bother to cry
Bye bye, bye bye
Yeah they took turns laying a rose down
Threw a handful of dirt into the deep ground
He’s not the only one who had a secret to hide
Bye bye, bye bye, bye Bye

Two black Cadillacs, two black Cadillacs

Two months ago his wife called the number on his phone
Turns out he'd been lying to both of them for oh so long
They decided then he’d never get away with doing this to them
Two black Cadillacs waiting for the ride down, ride down

[Chorus]

Yeah yeah

It was the first and the last time they saw each other face to face
They shared a crimson smile and just walked away
And left the secret at the grave

[Chorus]

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

So essentially this song is about two women and one man. The one woman is the man's mistress and the other is his wife. Well, the wife calls his phone one day and the mistress answers. The mistress/lover/girlfriend (whatever she is!) is angry he is married, and the wife is enraged he is having an affair. The two decide not to tolerate the man's behavior and so they come up with a plan to kill him. They do, but no one learns of their connection. Hence, everyone else saw him as a "good man" and a "good friend". The two women know, however, and they have their own secret of how they killed the man now, just like how he had his secret about the affair and his wife. I love this song by the way.

Not what happened. The wife and mistress knew about each other.

The new number, the one wife called was yet again another woman. A third one.

She was the catalyst for this.

The third woman, both wife and mistress may have figured was the one man would have left them over, leaving both wife and mistress out in cold.

Travel, while your theory is plausible, I don't think there were three, because the bridge mentions the first and last time they met face to face, and the choruses say "But the women in the two black veils didn't bother to cry". Emphasis on two. Therefore, there had to be two that met for the first time, and only two involved.

the secret is the reference to the stephen king book, christine, the car killed him and repaired itself. the car was christine, or like christine. he bought his wife a gift, and his lover, the cars, the wife found out about the lover and the two conspired, and used the 'killer' car to punish his wrongs.

this one is very straightforward.

everyone thought he was a good man because they didnt know of his cheating ways.

Basically this song is about revenge. The verse, "Two months ago his wife called the number on his phone" is where his wife first finds out he was cheating on her because she saw a strange number on his phone, and called it to find out who it was. Now the girl he was having an affair with had no idea he was married, so when she found out, both she and his wife conspired to get revenge by killing him. The verse, "But the women in the two black veils, they didn't bother to cry. Bye bye, bye bye. Yeah, they took turns layin' a rose down. Threw a handful of dirt into the deep ground. He's not the only one who had a secret to hide" means that they pretended to be sad by giving him roses, but really they were not, which is why they didn't cry.

By "one's for his wife, one's for the one who loved him at night" I took it as meaning that there were two hearses carrying two people in it. Which means that even tho they plotted against him, their plan failed and backfired in such a way that killed them both, but didn't implicate him because the preacher and his brother both said he was a good person, meaning they didn't know about him cheating on them and (possibly) killing them both. By "he's not the only one with a secret to hide", I took it as meaning that either his wife or mistress or both had been also cheating on him.

My Interpretation

That is an interesting interpretation, although I think you may be overthinking it. To me, the meaning of the song is much more straightforward. I think the post below by SlytherinWolf is accurate. The "one's for his wife, one's for the one who loved him at night" means that there are two cadillacs driving in the procession for his funeral. His wife is in one, his mistress is in the other. If they were dead in a hearse themselves, they wouldn't be able to lay a rose down or throw dirt into the ground. ...

No. He had another woman on the side, apart from mistress. Both wife and mistress knew about each other, and were fine with it.

What was the problem was the addition of the third woman, whose number is the one the wife called.

@ShieldG7 NO!! This song means that a guy was cheating on his wife and mistress, so they moth killed him! DUH! Sorry. :p

Read it, or listen to it.

The wife and the mistress knew about each other. What neither of them knew about, or was willing to put up with was the cheater had another woman too.

That was the number on the phone the wife called.

That was what got him killed. The addition of someone he was keeping a secret from the two of them.

The wife and mistress got together, decided to kill him and did it.

They each were riding in a procession car of their own.

of course, nobody really knows unless the songwriter shares the exact story he/she had in mind, but there were probably only two women. the wife called the number on his phone--she looked at his cell and probably saw that he called a certain number very often. That number turns out to be his mistress, and they are both angry at him when they realize that the other exists. They only meet once, at the funeral, so they probably didn't know each other/about each other beforehand...what are the odds of them never having met?

Could somebody tell me what happens in the video and explain the Stephen King Christine reference?

Song Meaning

here's a thought for you...the man who is hit by the cadillac is...the gay partner no one knew about..?

go to www.theboot.com Basically Carrie Underwoods mom is a Stephen King fan and so the video doesn't say who killed the guy so they are making it out like the car did it. If you watch in the end of the video the car fixes itself, like in the movie Christine.

has anyone thought after watching the video that not only did he have a wife and a lover but...he also had a boy toy(gay)...who got killed by Carrie-

"Two black Cadillacs driving in a slow parade/Headlights shining bright in the middle of the day/One is for his wife, The other for the woman who loved him at night/Two black Cadillacs meeting for the first time" In this line, she says that two women are driving to the funeral of a man. One is the man's wife, and the other is the woman he was having an affair with, and this is the 1st time they've met each other. "And the preacher said he was a good man/And his brother said he was a good friend/But the women in the two black veils, they didn't bother to cry/Bye bye, bye bye/Yeah, they took turns layin' a rose down/Threw a handful of dirt into the deep ground/He's not the only one who had a secret to hide/Bye bye, bye bye, bye bye" In the chorus, she says that everybody at the funeral thinks that he was a good man, but that only she and the other woman know the man's dark secret, and that they were the ones that killed the man to get revenge. "Two monthes ago, his wife called the number on his phone/Turns out he'd been lying to both of them for oh so long/They decided then he'd never get away with doing this to them/Two black Cadillacs waited for the right time, the right time" She's saying that the man's wife called the other woman on his cell phone and finds out about his affair. After that, the two woman decided he wouldn't get away with betraying them and plan the right time to kill him. "It was the first and the last time they saw each other face-to-face/They shared a crimson smile and just walked away/And left the secret at the grave" She says that the women met at the funeral, smile at each other (meaning they wouldn't tell anyone about what they'd done), and then left, never to tell their secret. Anyway, I like this song and it's one of Carrie Underwood's best vocally and lyrically.
