All Circles Lyrics

All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
But only in their leaving can they ever come back around
All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
But only in their leaving can they ever come back around
All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
But only in their leaving can they ever come back around
All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
But only in their leaving can they ever come back around
All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin

All circles begin with an end
They come back around
They come back around again

All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
But only in their leaving can they ever come back around
(All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin
But only in their leaving can they ever come back around)

It's the idea that even before a "circle" begins it's journey it knows it's going to end where it currently is, but it can't ever come back to where they are now unless they embark on this journey around the circle.

I think that it's the concept of a full-life, especially pertaining to Bear's death. That we all start and end in the same place mortally. From nothing life is created and at the end we become nothing again, but in order to get from nothing to nothing we must embark on this circuitous journey back to where we started.

In someways it's also relevant to Bear's death allowing Fox's to end because where Bear's circle ends Fox's begins.

the fact that this is sung as a round is fantastic.

I believe he's saying, "All circles presuppose they'll end where they begin."

Lyric Correction

It's definitely "they'll"

Brilliant song. I love how it ends the album.

Can you think of any way that this would change the meaning?

Actually, it's obvious. The meaning isn't changed as long as you always read it, "All circles presuppose _ end where they begin..." But if you start with "__ end where they begin, but only in their leaving can they come back around, all circles presuppose." then it only works with "they'll"

The point of the song is to be circular in theme and musically. I don't know enough about the actual notes being played to spot any circular patterns, but if I had to guess I'm sure there are.

I thought I heard "receiving" and "sleeping" instead of leaving a few times towards the end.

What does this song actually mean though?

In the CD booklet, the band accredits the lyrics to Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (available to read online here: http://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/hegel/works/ph/phprefac.htm ) which states "It is the process of its own becoming, the circle which presupposes its end as its purpose, and has its end for its beginning; it becomes concrete and actual only by being carried out, and by the end it involves."

Inserting the word "purpose" in there really adds or possibly changes the meaning of the saying. It's more than just a "dust to dust" idea.

This philosophy sums up so many things. As far as the cycle of hurt people hurting other people and familial ties (an abusive father creates an abusive father out of his son), this explains the problems of the world. But also, the circle of the world's creation, fall, and redemption comes back around with Christ. So the circle can be good or bad, it's just the way things are. And the same problems people face will haunt them all their lives, but that doesn't mean they gain the strength to face them. The work of the Church after Christ's ascension was to repeat His ministry, for the same issues would go on in the rest of the world. The Church is supposed to bring the world first circle, one soul at a time. Cool!

"If you improve we all improve" = "all circles presuppose"

Perfect song to have after Bear's Suicide. Five years later I still love this album more than any book of poetry I've read.
