Heaven Lyrics
our children will always hear
romantic tales of distant years
our gilded age may come and go
our crooked dreams will always glow
stick with me, oh you're my best friend
all of my life, you've always been
remember remember
all we fight for
remember remember
all we fight for
don't leave me, oh you're my best friend
all of my life, you've always been
don't leave me now, you're my best friend
all of my life, you've always been
remember remember
all we fight for
remember remember
all we fight for
oohh oh oh ooooh oh…
romantic tales of distant years
our gilded age may come and go
our crooked dreams will always glow
all of my life, you've always been
all we fight for
remember remember
all we fight for
all of my life, you've always been
don't leave me now, you're my best friend
all of my life, you've always been
all we fight for
remember remember
all we fight for

I think it's more than that. Of course, it sounds like a celebration of their (the singer and the one he speaks to) long lasting great friendship. But there is more to it.
In the first verse, the singer paints a picture for the future, where they (he and his friend) tell their children of the glourious life they've had (romantic tales of distant years, our gilded age). But then, after that, he almost begs his friend (or maybe it's his girlfriend, or his band) to stick with him and don't leave him. Adding to this: "remember all we fight for", which would be the situation described in the first verse, them being able to tell great tales of their past to their children.
Just my view of it. It's not actually a song about being happy, but a song about trying to achieve happiness by motivating a friend (girlfriend, band) to stay put.
I think this song is about a man whos wife is dieing of cancer or another disease hence our children will always hear romantic tales of distant years and also dont leave me your my best friend and also remember remember all we fight for
Wow...gretsch24. This song was used in last night's series finale of HIMYM, which somewhat tied into you and Schinken's translations.

I think this is a song about his true love and best friend who left him and he's pleading for her to come back, and trying to remind her of all the plans they had and what they fought for
@KyleJ696969 I wonder if it is that their lover is leaving them (divorce) or are they dying?? That is, the "fight" could be relevant to either scenario (that is fought over their differences hence divorce, or got to fight to keep living).

The music video for this song sums it up so well. They're all just happy to know each other, and to have made such great music together.
I also think this song is about The Walkmen. I remember there was a certain theme about a lot of this album: it's very stripped down and basic, the sleeve contains pictures of each member with their spouse and kids. To me it's about being happy about the adult life, and there's a sense of "we actually made it" about this song in particular. Well, it turned out to be their last album; this sense of full circle is there all the way through. Sweet tune. :)
