In the first verse, the singer paints a picture for the future, where they (he and his friend) tell their children of the glourious life they've had (romantic tales of distant years, our gilded age). But then, after that, he almost begs his friend (or maybe it's his girlfriend, or his band) to stick with him and don't leave him. Adding to this: "remember all we fight for", which would be the situation described in the first verse, them being able to tell great tales of their past to their children.
