Dark Parts Lyrics
The hands of God were bigger than grandpa's eyes
But still he broke the elastic on your waist
But he'll never break you, baby
But he'll never break you, baby
Oh oh oh oh oh oh...
The hands of God were bigger than grandpa's eyes
But he's all gone
The love you feel is strong
The love you feel is stronger
I will take the dark part
Of your heart into my heart
I will take the dark part
Of your heart into my heart
But still he broke the elastic on your waist
But he'll never break you, baby
But he'll never break you, baby
Oh oh oh oh oh oh...
But he's all gone
The love you feel is stronger
Of your heart into my heart
I will take the dark part
Of your heart into my heart

Yes, it was about his mother who had been abused (in a 'guess what' way, don't want to be graphic). He wanted to take on his mother's pain here. Very moving song. Very Sad. I'm still not sure if it was his mother's grandfather, or his mom's dad. I only know about this because I heard a very compelling interview on Public Radio just a few weeks ago, which made me look this band/artist up. The whole album is moving. I'm totally addicted.
Thanks @julzbegood. What a great way the writer expresses the childhood tragedy of his mother. What a way to express, what many feel and fear, is that of God absent from personal tragedy and pain!

I'm feel pretty certain this was the writer's/singer's "grandpa" and therefore his mother's father. My reasoning is that unless the writer's great-grandfather lived long enough to know his great-grandson, the writer wouldn't call his great-grandfather by such a familiar term as "grandpa".

It's an "it should have been me" song--when you have a friend or loved one you care about so much that you want to take whatever sickness afflicts them, physical or other, and bottle it inside yourself and suffer for them.
It's a lovely song.
how are there no comments on this
gosh
Do you thing the 'grandpa' reference has to do with his family in any way?

I'm not sure, but I know he wrote this song for his mom

A good friend of mine was molested by her grandfather when she was little. This song sums up the heartbreaking things you feel when you find that sort of thing out. Beautiful and sad.
