Yes, it was about his mother who had been abused (in a 'guess what' way, don't want to be graphic). He wanted to take on his mother's pain here. Very moving song. Very Sad. I'm still not sure if it was his mother's grandfather, or his mom's dad. I only know about this because I heard a very compelling interview on Public Radio just a few weeks ago, which made me look this band/artist up. The whole album is moving. I'm totally addicted.

Thanks @julzbegood. What a great way the writer expresses the childhood tragedy of his mother. What a way to express, what many feel and fear, is that of God absent from personal tragedy and pain!

I'm feel pretty certain this was the writer's/singer's "grandpa" and therefore his mother's father. My reasoning is that unless the writer's great-grandfather lived long enough to know his great-grandson, the writer wouldn't call his great-grandfather by such a familiar term as "grandpa".
