About Today Lyrics
Today you were far away
And I didn't ask you why
What could I say?
I was far away
You just walked away
And I just watched you
What could I say?
How close am I to losing you?
Tonight, you just close your eyes
And I just watch you slip away
How close am I to losing you?
Hey, are you awake?
Yeah I'm right here
Well can I ask you about today?
How close am I to losing you?
How close am I to losing?
And I didn't ask you why
What could I say?
I was far away
You just walked away
And I just watched you
What could I say?
How close am I to losing you?
Tonight, you just close your eyes
And I just watch you slip away
How close am I to losing you?
Hey, are you awake?
Yeah I'm right here
Well can I ask you about today?
How close am I to losing you?
How close am I to losing?

This is the sunset of a relationship. This is when love is a dying flame. This is when a man cares so much about a girl, that he lets her walk away. Though he asks about her day, he knows the inevitable and wonders when that day will come when the sun will sink behind the mountain and go to bed alone. We've all been this man, where the woman simply doesnt understand how much we care, nor understand that our life, is her life. In the end, no kindling will restart that flame and you're left to watch her backside disappear into the dying warmth of the evening sun. All this because a man loves a woman.
This is beautiful, mind if i quote?

And perfectly in a terrible sense of loss understanding.

Really well put, made me tear up reading this description. I have been there and at times still feel it now as I'm trying to hold on to something that keeps slipping away. I hope the sun never sinks behind the mountain. Thank you for this.

@hbwilly Perfect description. I loved the song so much. I loved your comment too. There is such person for whom I would do anything but she just wants to leave no matter what. May be there is no way you could convince some people to stay.

they are the wrong lyrics, these are correct for About Today.... Today you were far away and I didn't ask you why What could I say I was far away You just walked away and I just watched you What could I say
How close am I to losing you
Tonight you just close your eyes and I just watch you slip away
How close am I to losing you
Hey, are you awake Yeah I'm right here Well can I ask you about today
How close am I to losing you How close am I to losing
For me this means:someone you love just walks away, without explanation, without reason, one minute they are there, next they are gone.
I think this song is about the end of a relationship, that awful stage where you both know it's over, but neither can bring themselves to say it.
Today you were far away and I didn't ask you why What could I say I was far away You just walked away and I just watched you What could I say
The distance is building between them and he notices it, but what can he say? He knows it's over, he feels it too. Saying something would just bring about the inevitable end.
Tonight you just close your eyes and I just watch you slip away
They go to bed and don't even bother pretending - no "goodnight", no kiss. She just closes her eyes and he watches her slip away from him.
Hey, are you awake Yeah I'm right here Well can I ask you about today
Unlike other posters, I don't think he's just asking her about her day. This is much more poignant than that. He's finally summoned the courage to ask her "about today". About why she was so distant from him, why she didn't even say goodnight. It has become too much. He knows the answer, and that's why it is so difficult to ask.
@Surelynot This is the right one. I don't even understand how a few of these other people even came to their interpretation. This should be the top answer.

I think this song is about feeling powerless to loosing someone. To me the protagonist knows what he should be doing but he doesn't. Its not clear if its due to a low self esteem on behalf of the protagonist or an underlying apathy in the relationship. It's also one of the most beautifully sad pieces of music and really conveys the hopelessness of the situation. Fantastic song!
Sad this comment doesn't have more ups, it's more accurate than any of the other interpretations here. This is exactly what the song is about.

Cheers betsapp91. Just felt I seen the song a different way to those posts above. Had to make it heard

It's about liking someone who for what ever reason you can't talk to about how you feel, you feel yourself losing your grip on them. You can't talk about your feeling , but you can be simple and polite; asking "About today"
I believe that 'losing' a person is ment as someone who's severely depressed. Not so much closure on a relationship. Not be able to connect with a person, hence the question "can I ask you why?" Also in "Today you were far away, and I didn't ask you why, What could I say, I was far away" what I interpret as not being able to understand his/her world, not knowing his/her problems, though the willingness to cooperate and even the guilt of not knowing how to handle the situation. As someone who can't seem to be motived to get out of bed "hey are you awake?". Whereas these are question as you don't want to seem too harsh on such a person.
This could possibly be about losing your conscience, your thoughts or yourself, or becoming someone else (someone far less superb) due to a changing environment, the bad sort of change.
A distance between the teller and the person who he used to be is evolving, which he tends to notice 'today' (e.g. 'Today you were far away' or 'you just walked away').
He is obviously left speechless by the changing environment and by himself becoming someone else (e.g. the repeating of 'What could I say?').
'How close am I to losing you' is him being afraid of changing. He wants the old him back and is afraid of losing the old him.
'Tonight you just close your eyes' is really soothing, closing his eyes like he used to and therefore doing things he used to do, trying to relax and make everything good again.
'and I just watch you slip away'. This is where the angst arrives, as he is scared that when he wakes up, he will be changed.
'Hey, are you awake Yeah I'm right here Well can I ask you about today' He either can't sleep or scares himself awake, trying to soothe his thoughts by asking himself (his old self, his conscience) either why it is fleeing from him or how he should react to every incentive received that day.
I'm not saying this is what the song is about, it is just another way of interpreting it. To me this interpretation is very recognizable.
I think it's a song about a feeling in general. Like if you've been too far from someone for a while and you're trying to make it up by being present and interested in what is going on in their life in general.
My family lost my brother to addiction and my older brother chose this song for his funeral. It perfectly captured the feelings we had when we lost him.
@daniellehughes so sorry for your loss. Good song choice. Definitely My favorite song about loss.

I listened to this song for long and felt sad about it. Overall I felt depressed without knowing way. Its about losing someone, is it losing to your brother like the movie? Is it about losing a lover? Who are you losing?
Now I know. Its about losing my mother. I lost her to cancer less than a month ago, and this song now make so much sense, its so clear.
She was far away because she didn't know exactly what was hapenning to her, she didn't know that this is the end. I was there, but I couldn't do anything, so I was far away.
On her last two days, she was unconscious. She closed her eyes, and she opened them only when I tried really hard to wake her up. The last contact she had with me was her kiss. She was slipping away, and I was getting closer to losing you.
and I was closer to losing
@muhannad77 Sorry dude :(

@muhannad77 I absolutely agree with you. I listened to the song and my dad is in stage seven Alzheimer’s and we don’t have much time left. I don’t think it’s a romantic break up song I think it’s him watching somebody that he loves move on into the next whatever it is and he is struggling. With that much I will never listen to the song again. Oh Lord I am a basket case. I’m so sorry for your loss. This whole losing parents business just pretty much sucks
