Todd's Ship Gods (Above All Things) Lyrics
Grease, sweat, coffee, faded shipyard pictures
Giant living there I used to know
Author of the testosterone scriptures
Where did you go?
Now I remember what you told me that time
Falling from my bike,
scraping my knee
If you're gonna weep,
keep it from sunshine,
So no one sees
I won't cry
Above all things boy, be a man
See little boy hiding amongst shadows
Ashamed of tears exposing ancient pain
From the storms predicted by the Tarot
Pray for the rain
I won't cry
Above all things boy, be a man
Giant living there I used to know
Author of the testosterone scriptures
Where did you go?
Falling from my bike,
scraping my knee
If you're gonna weep,
keep it from sunshine,
So no one sees
Above all things boy, be a man
Ashamed of tears exposing ancient pain
From the storms predicted by the Tarot
Pray for the rain
Above all things boy, be a man

Its about the dangers of holding back your tears all of your life.
Yeah, the masked magician is right. More than that though, it is about how much of an effect over masculinity has on young boys--it really screws them up for life, makes them unable to express emotion, as if that makes a boy a "man". The only line I don't understand is the one about Tarot...what does that have to do with the song...?
@freakishfae "From the storms predicted by the Tarot" I think it means : the disasters that were predicted. You know your parents are going to die.

isnt it about pete steeles dad
you gotta stick up for yourself, and pete steeles dad would have stook up for you!!!
I think it is actually about peter's dad, he worked in a ship yard, and the main words about being a man were probobly words his father told him as a boy.
i actually was thinking about this listening to it on the way home. i thought it might be about his dad. i didn't know he worked at a shipyard, but i thought, living in brooklyn, it'd make sense. this song is great, and it hits my heart right in the right place. i'm actually making a flash music video for it.
Such a beautful song, I think its all clear its definately about masculinity as said in previous comments and allthough its not entirely clear I think the 'great living' is reference to a great human, a big man, strengthening the idea previously commented on that the man he's talking about is his father.
Pete wrote this wonderful song for his father who died a little while back. "Author of the Testosterone Scriptures, Where did you go?" This one line alone tells you that Pete's Dad must have been a nail-eating hard ass and that Pete is missing him....
Notice how he sings most of the song in a higher than usual range for him? I think this is Pete emulating the boy that he was. The LAST verse however is sang in his normal deep range. Telling us that the boy is now a man. Yet he feels like a little boy hiding amongst those shadows, ashamed of the tears he WISHES he could shed for his father. ("Pray for the rain.") Tears that his father would in fact despise.
This song is absolutely TOO brilliant and shows how much of an anointed songwriter Pete was....
A beautiful song about Peter Steele's dad
My tribute band and I are working on this song today. It came out awesome. To me it always seemed to be about Peters father and in a way all mens fathers teaching us to be strong and never cry before others. Strong meaning to me as I can't cry.
