Heavyweight Lyrics
I'm looking for a sign that I can't see.
The good, the bad, it's somewhere in between.
These warning signs,
these urban grinds,
let me down.
The kids are building fires by their homes.
The smoke is sending signals out in code.
Yeah, these safety suits,
these parachutes...
I don't know.
Gotta stop. Drop. Roll.
When all these walls come down,
they'll shake us.
We fight. We're not to be,
not to be weightless.
When all these stars hit ground,
they'll wake us.
We fight. We're not to be,
not to be weightless.
I'm choking on the words that I can't say.
My lungs are full but everything's misplaced.
These junkyard dogs,
these cherry bombs,
go off.
The sun, the sky, the moon, will fall apart;
come tumbling down just like a house of cards.
These fire escapes,
these lush landscapes,
it fades.
When all these walls come down,
they'll shake us.
We fight. We're not to be,
not to be weightless.
When all these stars hit ground,
they'll wake us.
We fight. We're not to be,
not to be weightless.
Not to be weightless.
I can feel this heavy weight hanging around my neck.
I can feel your heartbeat bringing me back... back... again.
When all these walls come down,
they'll shake us.
We fight. We're not to be,
not to be weightless.
When all these stars hit ground,
they'll wake us.
We fight. We're not to be,
not to be weightless.
Be weightless.
Be weightless.
The good, the bad, it's somewhere in between.
These warning signs,
these urban grinds,
let me down.
The smoke is sending signals out in code.
Yeah, these safety suits,
these parachutes...

We fight. We're not to be,

These junkyard dogs,

This song is a response to the actions of Chris Benoit's double murder, suicide. He was a heavyweight champion (2005) WWE wrestler for whom OLP wrote the song "Whatever" as the theme song for his WWE entrances. It was used from 2002-2007. He died 6 days after his last match, on June 25, 2007, after killing his wife and seven year old son. OLP retired the song "Whatever" in 2012 out of respect. If you watch the video for "Heavyweight", the intro reads: "A former boxer escapes to country after a hard fought career. He has a dream of teaching what he's learned to young, disenfranchised youth, pairing wisdom and christian moral values with physical fitness, and self defense. He dedicates his home, and the rest of his life to this pursuit, but soon found himself up against his greatest opponent ever, himself." The general medical consensus is that Chris Benoit's breakdown was caused by Concussion Syndrome. Shorlty before the breakdown, Chris had made plans to leave the WWE to start his own wrestling school, after spending time at Lance Storm's school in Calgary, and said his goal was to retire to teach youth in Georgia.
This is a love song.
He's saying that life gets confusing and it can be hard to find your way. With all the chaos and varying opinions and temptations, it's hard to find the "signs" that point to what's right and help you stay true to your values. It's easy to just let go, become "weightless" and be dragged along by the rush of opinions and press and information overload.
In the midst of this, the singer indicates that his partner (presumably a woman) is the heavyweight or the anchor that holds him in place and keeps him from being lost in the rush. She reminds him of who he is and what really matters in his life so that he can stay true instead of becoming weightless.
OLP is back!! I don't think this is necessarily a love song -that's not how I interpret it. It gives me more of a 'fighting for strength' sort of impression. The walls will inevitably crash; what holds you in place and gives you security now WILL fall; but right now we're fighting so we don't fall down with those walls. We don't want to be weightless when the most critical time of our life draws near.
