Toy Soldiers Lyrics
Who'll be my Montague now
To this broken Capulet
How, how, how if not for you
You'll be my local hero, be my role model,
And don't, don't, don't fail me now
(My love)
Don't you want love, don't you want to love?
I'm your biggest fan, it's so good to finally meet ya
I deserve a little more wouldn't you say?
Don't you want love, don't you want to,
Don't you think I deserve better after all that we've been through?
Don't you want love, now what you say?
Toy soldiers, I follow you like toy soldiers
I follow you like toy soldiers
I will love you like goodbye
I will love you like you died, died, died a martyr for me
(My love)
Don't you want love, don't you want this
Don't you look so shocked it's not the way I planned it
I deserve a little more wouldn't you say?
Don't you want love, don't you fight back, no
This will hurt less if you just submit
So how about a little gratitude for what I say?
Toy soldiers, I follow you like toy soldiers
I follow you like toy soldiers
They don't know you, not like I do
Only you and I were meant to be
Understand you, just like I do
Just like you and I were meant to be forever
One day you will learn to love me
One day you will thank me, you'll see
If I can't have you no one can
I follow you like toy soldiers
I follow
Understand you, just like I do
Just like you and I were meant to be
Don't know you, not like I do
Only you and I were meant to be
Understand you, just like I do
Just like you and I were meant to be forever

It starts out innocent enough. Simple infatuation and adoration; maybe even dependence that suggests that the person being sung to is, well, a role model. "Who’ll be my Montague now, To this broken Capulet How, how, how if not for you And you’ll be my local hero Be my role model And don’t, don’t, don’t fail me now"
Then we get to this part: "Don’t you wanna love, Don’t you wanna love, I’m your biggest fan It’s so good to finally meet ya I deserve a little more Wouldn’t you say?"
They say "I deserve a little more". A little more what? A little more love? They obviously want special attention from this person.
And then this happens: "Don’t you want love Don’t you want this Don't you look so shocked This was not the way I planned it I deserve a little more" "Don’t you want love, Don’t you fight back Know this will hurt less if you just submit so (love) How bout a little gratitude"
This suggests rape. Or attempted rape, at least. "This will hurt less if you just submit." "Don't you fight back." "Don't you want this? Don't look so shocked."
"One day you will Learn to love me One day you will Thank me, you’ll see If I can’t have you No one can"
This song seems to be about a delusional person who will have their true love by any means necessary, even if it means forcing them to pretend to love them. They're jealous and crazy, so they won't let this person be loved by anyone else. For all good intents and purposes, they're saying that this person is theirs and theirs alone. They want to possess them entirely. Saying that they will follow them like "toy soldiers" is them essentially saying they will be steadfast and tireless in their efforts to court them.
And that is my interpretation.
At first I thought this song was about someone in love with someone else, but when I really started to listen to the lyrics I thought different. It's clear this song is about an obsessive fan/stalker-type.
"I'm your biggest fan, it's so good to finally meet ya"
So the fan just met them,
"Don't you want love, don't you fight back, no This will hurt less if you just submit So how about a little gratitude for what I say?"
And now they talk about loving him, and tell him not to resist and that it's easier just to give in.
"One day you will learn to love me One day you will thank me, you'll see If I can't have you no one can"
It's all really freakin' creepy if you think about it.
To me this song is about Romeo and Juliet, basically an obsessive and compulsive relationship. Montague and Capulet. "Toy soldiers, I follow you like toy soldiers I follow you like toy soldiers" like how Romeo followed Juliet. "Don't you want love, don't you want to love? I'm your biggest fan, it's so good to finally meet ya I deserve a little more wouldn't you say?" is from when R and J first meet.
It might just be me but I reckon the singer is singing about a man, rather a girl. Purely because he refers to himself as Capulet and the idol as Montague, Romeo was the Montague and a man. Though the Capulet was Juliet thus a girl, the singer could be representing himself as someone who needs to be saved and perhaps admitting his own distress (not necessarily saying girls are like this, I'm referring to Juliet).
He also says "Local Hero" rather than Heroine (though it could refer to both sexes), he also seems to have a lot of faith and loyalty to this person, worshiping and idolising him as opposed to being in love (though there could be romantic/sexual/etc feelings)
It is a common stereotype that boys used to play with toy soldiers and the singer is claiming he will follow him like one. The part about saying "Just submit, it will hurt less" I don't think is rape, more of an attack or an abduction. The singer's frustration and desire coming out more violently now.
In short, I reckon he could be singing about another man? Ahaha, just a thought!
@ShushHush Omg, pretty much what I thought myself xD Tho I also agree with the top comment above..

First to comment wow im shocked. love this song. Its about a guy who is obviously in love with this girl, he'll do anything for her. He'll be her guard like soldiers. This kinda reminds me a like a stalker, though lol Even though I know its probably not. But what I said first is what the song is about.
Actually, you're right. It was written about a stalker he (Josh) had. It's basically written from the perspective of a stalker. I love it though, great song!

Really? Where did he say that? That makes a lot of sense, I never looked at the song that way.

Actually, you're wrong. This is about Josh pleading with the Toy Soldiers to help him over throw Queen Carolina.

@connora Well I know what the song is actually about. I read the story behind it. But If someone wasn't to read the story. This is what the perception of it would be.
