Scaretale Lyrics

Once upon a time in a daymare
Dying to meet you, litlle child, enter enter this sideshow

Time for bed, the cradle still rocks
Thirteen chimes on a dead man's clock
Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock

The bride will lure you, cook you, eat you
Your dear innocence boiled to feed the evil in need of fear

Burning farms and squealing pigs
A pool of snakes to swim with, oh sweet poison
Bite me, bite me

"Ladies and gentlemen
Be heartlessly welcome!
To Cirque De Morgue
And what a show we have for you tonight!"

Restless souls will put on their dancing shoes
Mindless ghouls with lots of limbs to lose
Illusionists, contortionist,
Tightrope - walkers thightening the noose

Horde of spiders, closet tentacles
Laughing harpies with their tallons ripping
Sher-chrisss, per-vizz

The pendulum still sways for you
Such are the darks here to show you, child in a corner
Fallen mirrors, all kingdom in cinders

This reminds me a lot of "Cirque du Freak" from the Saga of Darren Shan - one of my favourite series!

I love Anette's voice in this too, somehow I don't think Tarja could have pulled it off, and I'm glad to see a song that really takes advantage of Anette's voice

I couldn't agree more! I was reading Cirque du Freak when I heard this the first time and I actually had to put down my book to marvel at how perfectly it worked.

One of the most theatrical and amazing songs ever written by Nightwish. Marco's part is awesome.

I was going to comment about Marco's part, he is quite a character, awesome indeed

On a surface level, this song is about a child who falls asleep for a nap (hence "daymare") and subsequently enters a realm of nightmares. Very creepy and very cool!

But I always like to look for meaning beyond the surface level. Isn't real life kind of a horror story, in its own way? We deal with dark emotions, circumstances outside of our control, and failures throughout this life...Everyone has a different beast that torments them. I almost see it as Nightwish encouraging us to face this life anyway, and even embrace the thrill of it. Things will go wrong, no matter what we can do. The key is to weather the storm anyway, which is why the "pendulum still swings" for us. It seems very similar to Ghost River in that sense.

And this world really is one of fallen mirrors. How often do we look at ourselves and see worthlessness, even though every one of us is valuable?

"Kingdom in cinders" makes sense in that context, too. This world often seems like it's burning, because of the many things that are going wrong and falling apart.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I like thinking of it this way. :) Regardless, this song is pure poetry. I am in awe of Tuomas' lyrical gifts. And Anette did a brilliant job, too! :D

My Interpretation

Definitely made me thing of 'The Nightmare Before Christmas', and then I saw that Tim Burton was one of Tuomas' inspirations for the album. Only Nightwish could pull off such a song. Fantastic.

My Opinion

I don't think this song has any actual meaning or message behind it. I think its just about a child's nightmares
