So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new.
This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus.
Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness".
The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1.
All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy.
And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns)
There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.
This place we belong is the world of either choices
We have a little freedom in the rules that go more and more complicated
If someone makes a mistake and I could compensate the blan
I would be able to go to the alternate world behind the door without permission
I don't know who started this "game"
I was thinking no one would challenge it
But I find I was made to standa at the place to start
As a whispering voice told my heart, lead my heart
I was made to stand
I look around and nothing differs from the world where I was
In the world of this "game" really in the "SOU" of someone?
This world is so real and is it too actual to believe in
If I get out of here, I can chase a dream free
Even the rule of this "game" is not clear
I search the way to go on it,
I trace the memory appearing on my shadow clearly
And the much "SOU" I remember
So I find this "game" is the "game" I started...
It is only I that can compensate the blank
Off this dazzling "world of this game"
I will fill in it with more mightiness than ever
Believing I can do what I can't do
It is nobody but I
That can open the door free
I asserted "we" had nothing to do
With everything that restricted us...
The way to make it sure appears faintly
I will be able to get out if I find me,
Who is chasing a dream, in the "world in this game" in "SOU"
And talk with "him"
This dazzling "world in this game"
Is the world my "SOU" shows
This "game" repeats and continues
In this "SOU" of no rational reason
It is a dream in "SOU"...
We have a little freedom in the rules that go more and more complicated
If someone makes a mistake and I could compensate the blan
I would be able to go to the alternate world behind the door without permission
I don't know who started this "game"
I was thinking no one would challenge it
